No. Repubs in the state legislature won't go against Christie if he veto's it.

He has the power to line-item veto.
Someone very familiar with the bill might know if it's possible to tailor it so that poker is allowed but other games are not.

Obvious 2016 nomination driving this. Last year it was the state constitution, new excuse this year that plays to the right.

Sheldon Adelson will have no problem donating 100 million+ to the next Republican nominee and we know where he stands on this issue.

a simple search will show otherwise... like googling democrats oppose gambling or republicans approve

The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind Poll shows 56 percent of voters surveyed are opposed to casinos anywhere else but in Atlantic City. Thirty-five percent say casinos should be added elsewhere in the state.

Assemblyman John Burzichelli, a southern New Jersey Democrat, opposes expanding casino gambling beyond Atlantic City.

LINK

The left has it's own reasons for opposition. Oftentimes a proposal gives tax breaks to casinos... Follow the money.

According to him, he "stands" to lose roughly 10% of revenues if online gambling is approved.
That's not to say he wouldn't support it IF he is adequately compensated for his loss.

My guess is that since he's eyeing a presidential run, he doesn't want to do anything that might rustle jimmies down in Jesusland.
DDLJ has it right IMO. Not many Republicans would vote to override a veto.

Haven't bought it yet. Probably waiting on bill.

Although knowing PokerStars, they might end up buying it anyway just to be charitable.

No one's talking about the electorate as a whole in NJ or Nationally, we're talking about the SEGMENT of the electorate that ANY Republican has to have to get a national nomination and that is the far right fundies.

Would the fundies jump ship and vote for a democrat?

NJ unemployment is roughly the national average... 10%. And NJ is suffering all the other effects of the recession. I think the recession will last at least 4 more years.

If this bill has potential to improve NJ's unemployment rate, or if it could improve NJ's economy overall, Christie would score big points in 2016 by passing it now, reaping the economic rewards, and proving he can lead the nation out of the recession as evidenced by results in his own state.

However, he fears the bill would create more poverty than affluence. Casinos take the money, and whatever revenues the state got would be paid back in welfare to all the newly busto citizens of NJ.

------
Many powerful interests, including wealthy gaming interests, from Native American gaming to B+M casinos are fighting tooth and nail to prevent online gaming. I wouldn't categorize them all as fundamentalists nor as from the right..

Too many LOLs to respond to... but one reaches out and grabs me... (bolded). You DO realize in most states only Republicans vote to NOMINATE a REPUBLICAN for President right? And the Fundies get out the vote... it's not rocket science.

The jobs argument is completely bunk and a little sociopathic without addressing the addiction argument. What good are extra jobs if that comes at expense of misery for other people? You can create some jobs by legalizing contract killings, just to give an extreme example, but I doubt that on the whole it would be a desirable thing.

If you want to increase business in AC move all the poor crackheads out of the area. The place is disgusting. It's barely safe to walk on the boardwalk at night, and the main street with all the casinos on it looks like the most dangerous area in the US. People who don't even know their own first names are just roaming around.

The scum of the universe live there. When AC was evacuated for Irene the state transported these poor crackheads to Rowan University 40 miles west as a shelter. These poor crackheads escaped or left the shelter at night and looted both the university and local residents with ease due to power loss. The school had their police force grab their assault rifles to bring back the peace. Make AC more safe and more people might make a trip out of it, especially in the summer. But for now the beach will be full of sand covered syringes, broken beer bottles, and cigarette buds. What a treat of a place!

his (2) points are valid but nothing new....gamblers gonna gamble and poker players are gonna stay home instead of making the trek.

what we should focus on is the opportunity cost of not taking the leap 1st, i.e tax dollars/jobs/market share going to other states that exponentially benefits the initial "risk takers" as the revenue grows to its max

unfortunately i think its all for naught as he could care less about NJ if the trade-off is less financial backing for his 2016 campaign.....which it will be....unless....Super Scheinberg comes in to save us from our gov't. could christie be smart enough to angle for the Stars PAC??

too much hate. did you actually watch the stream? he answered joe in a really polite manner and expressed his views clearly.

his first point is easy for us to refute, but can we really refute the second point (online poker will encourage problem gambling)? if so, what's the best way of communicating that?

What about the fact that losses can be monitored and limits can be set much easier online?

Definitely, David. The legislation even mandates that.

I wish I had seen this earlier in the day. Great work getting the question through! Sounds like a very unfortunate answer. Hopefully we can help change his mind/address his concerns.

It was definitely great work by the NJ posters who phoned in and everyone else who tweeted the show's hashtag to get the question asked.
