A friend of mine had 400k in chips from various LA/LV casinos stolen from his house yesterday in Los Angeles. If anyone gets offered chips for sale please contact LAPD or pm me. There will be some sort of reward for anyone assisting in the recovery of the chips.

I'll go ahead and be THAT GUY: keeping that much money in casino chips is very stupid. Keeping that much money in casino chips in your residence is even dumber.

I smell your friend was dodging the irs wasn't he?[just kidding, or was he? lol], why in gods name did he have 400k of chips in his house?, the first thing i think about is that he can afford to lose 400k in chips if he has them laying around in his house.

Where this some collectors chips?[like old ones from the 20s or 30s or something?] or real modern playchips?.

But if it where just normal chips then i am afraid he has seen the last of them, because i don't think the thieves will cash them in all at the same time if they are smart, and normal chips are normal chips, so no way to identify them.

The robbers were probably reading this forum when that guy got robbed by 2 people with guns when he had a child at home.

They saw how he was victim blamed, how he should deserve to lose it all because he didn't have a gun or didn't go to the bank in the middle of the night etc.

They knew they could just take the money.

He ain't wrong tho. If you have $5k in cash on you, then you can definitely make yourself a target to thieves/robbers. What do you think 100k+ will do?

Money is god in this country to some people....

If you have 400k in your home I hope you have them hidden inside of a wall or the most bad-ass safe imaginable

Basic money management bro. Might as well turn these threads into a "how not to get robbed 101" class as any of us can be in that situation in 1 degree or another.

If you got gold, there is gonna be someone who wants to take it. You learn this stuff at elementary school age, of course at that age it's lolipops and toys but same human dynamics.

Victim blaming makes me sick. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

FYP.

The phrase "chip walking" is shorthand among anti-money laundering law enforcement for taking chips out of an establishment where they were issued for gaming purposes.

"For example, one issue we have been discussing with the IRS BSA examiners, as well as the AGA, is chip walking. Chip walking in and of itself may not be suspicious. We know there can be legitimate reasons why a patron would leave a casino and take chips with him or her, but there may also be less innocent reasons. A customer who walks out of your casino with a large amount of chips, or stores them on-site in a lock box for an extended period of time, may be trying to hide their funds or structure. This might be the kind of activity that you should report."

Usually agree with you but there just isn't any need to have 400k in chips somewhere they are liable to get stolen. Commerce bank? Sure. Regular bank? Ok. Keeping 400k in chips in your closet because you don't want to pay taxes? Probably had it coming. I still feel bad for the guy, that's a real sick beat. But yeah, pay your taxes guys.

I actually wonder if a random thief broke into a residence and saw these chips laying out, if they'd even think they were real currency?

I'd imagine the avg joe would imagine these chips were just worthless toy chips.

Government is a bunch of crooks but yeah, paying your taxes is indeed a smart decision. Or don't, your call. I still feel absolutely sick for the victim and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I wouldn't feel safe with 400k in chips anywhere outside the casino. I think you can feel bad for the victim and acknowledge that this was likely preventable at the same time.

Although I want to ask one thing - Has this happened in real life or in a video game, let me try to be serious for one second...

So why was he keeping 400 000 $ worth of chips in house?

If it was for tax evasion purposes, you gotta get your story straight, and soon. Make something up (that can stick ofc) and do it fast.

Where were they hidden? Lying around the house, in some kind of a box, in a safe...

Reason why you need to ask yourself this is simple. Because who ever stole it knew they were there. Now I would cross close friends from this list, not because I'm naive person who believes in buddies and friendship, but because I do not think any of the close friend would be stupid enough to take them all. If someone was in the jam, and didn't know any other way probably there would 5-10-15% of the chips missing, not all of it. So it is 99% friend of a friend, facebook buddy, skype contact, some1 who knew there was 400k to be taken.

When did it happen?

So as you narrow down number of ppl who could do it, ask yourself who had the opportunity to do it.

My course of action.

Do not call police if you haven't allready. My assumption here is that you are not so innocent and you are just gonna get in trouble.
Make a list.
Get some private investigator.
Call all and every1 of your contacts.
Offer a bounty.
Hope and pray.
