I would rate that as implausible deniability. Sure, you can walk around goose stepping with your arm extended in front of you and claim that you are just stretching your back, but that isn't plausible.

It's interesting how your perspective on student protests changes as you age.

This is the most significant sustained level of student protests in the United States in the last twenty years, and probably the most significant in the last fifty years. But it doesn't seem that tumultuous to me because I am long past my college days. The protests have had little or no impact on my daily routine.

I remember noticing this same phenomenon when I was a kid. The late 60s and early 70s were a relatively vivid time in the memory of my parents because that's when they were college. But that period was much less vivid for my grandparents. In 1969, my grandparents got up, went to work, and came home and did whatever they did, just as they had done five years earlier. And the protests didn't change their politics much either. They weren't radicals by any means, but they had started voting for Democrats in the era of FDR and Truman, and as far as I know, continued to do so until they died.

They are being manipulated by the social self. Three aspects of self: social self, conscious self, individuating self.

During the socialization stage, the social self is in the position of power and oppresses the individuating self. This is necessary for the child’s development.

In the next stage of development, the conscious self is supposed to advocate for the (oppressed) individuating self to take the wheel. The social self attempts to sabotage this process, and maintain its power position, by manipulating the conscious self to advocate for an oppressed political group instead. The social self is successful with this strategy because, unlike with the individuating self, the conscious self can actually see how these political groups are mistreated.

It’s better to realize these young people are captured by a distortion of a deeper truth rather than simply writing them off as stupid. We have to outcompete the social self by providing these kids with a better story involving the individuating self. Fortunately, we already have plenty to work with via Hero’s Journey movies and stories.
