my thoughts are that humans are nearly incapable of keeping secrets. so any conspiracy that involves a large group of people not talking about something is most likely impossible.

Except I would also add most people and groups (especially governments) are also incompetent; so if the choice is between incompetence or some super elaborate plot of genius, all else being equal it is more likely to be the former.
