Regressive taxes are still good for income redistribution from the wealthy to the poor. That being said, these are relatively easy fixes - all those European and Asian countries with lower inequality than the US use VAT taxes.

Yeah, Doyle Brunson is actually the only crusher that I would of thought of as supporting Trump. I would not consider someone like Matusow who is always broke (especially since not receiving the Full Tilt monthly checks) as a crusher.

What recent research has found is exemptions from VAT/sales tax for food and other staple items actually end up being more regressive.

People aren't exactly sure why but some theories that's been proposed are:
Gains are captured by producers mostly
High income households spend a lot more on food (better quality and more quantity, and yeah, data strongly suggests higher income households throw away literally tons of food)

There are a lot of studies looking for whether exemptions improve the redistribution effects of VAT... most couldn't find support for the idea that exemptions overall decreased the VAT tax burden on lower income households.

At this point most proponents of VAT/sales tax think it's better to just implement a flat rate across the board and then give some types of refund (or use the money for a poverty alleviation program)

Have you thought about some reasons why that may be? The Rs don't really want to cordon themselves off--they want to flood places with zany **** to muddy the waters etc. roped off by themselves doesn't really accomplish that.
