When are they going to tap the Asian markets? When are they going to tap the Asian markets?

11-17-2008 , 08:25 PM
I assumed that china, india, korea, se asia would be a focus of stars/tilt as they are a relatively untapped market with so many potential players. When stars launched the appt tournies I would have thought there would be an influx of players from Asian countries. This obviously would be great for the poker economy, but I still have yet to see any players from asia online (save a few expats in korea and HK). I am surprised by this, unless the plans have been abandoned for whatever reason.

Any guesses?

I would think out over 2billion people, at least 10 or 11 would have the means and desire to play online.

Seriously though this would be so huge for online poker, dwarfing the "moneymaker
effect".

if the asians got in it'd deystroy online poker as we know it imo....it'd be filled with ex-Starcraft pros and ex-WoW gold miners who would make playing 10,000 hands a day childs play.

na, there is not enough gambling book in those language for them to be good at.
i think this is because most asian government ban online gaming....
asian will love poker if they hav a chance to interact with it.
it's now mostly played in asia by people who lived in NA or EU for many many year.
just matter of time game goes popular.

This. But, Asians have a much different approach to gambling from what I know. They LOVE the uncertainty aspect, it is the whole point of the game for them. We could have guys pushing in and wanting to be called, with gutshot draws . So you would have the hardcore grind machines playing 18 hours a day, but a lot of fish too.

They'll have real trouble with the Chinese market. In the Pokercast last week Terence Chan said the only place he'd visited where he'd typed in 'pokerstars.com' and it was blocked, was China. That's a massive dormant market we're missing out on.

I disagree. Asians are not born knowing how to destroy poker, or even Starcraft. Some will approach the game professionally, play loads, and become very good. Like the Korean Pro-Starcraft players we know of. But why do you assume all Koreans are great at Starcraft just because there are those great pros? I bet plenty of Koreans play all the time and suck. We are not scared of Americans being allowed to play poker even though a bunch of Americans have taken a fortune out of the games like cts, durrrr, aba etc. because we know for every one that owns, 500 suck. You just dont hear about them except for tuff_fish.

If they do finally tap these markets, and we start having some amounts of asian regulars at the tables, what I imagine is: forget about figuring out any of their ranges. We'd never be able to get in their heads.

asians could be slightly harder players to beat but still there will be plenty of fish around. plus you can always learn from your enemies

My roommate at Purdue was an asian engineering major. Very good at math/odds/all that good stuff.

We all learned how to play cards together, and he understood the basics of odds and whatnot.

He was sooooo bad. Of course everyone else was bad at the time too, but my room mate was the type who just never folded...or would call a river bet with K high or something.

I'm not saying we wont see some of these 24/7 starcraft game pros figuring out how to beat online poker, but for some reason when gambling is involved it seems to throw off their chi :P

the paranoids always point out the examples of this or that asian who is so good. meanwhile they rely on ultra small sample sizes. on avg asian IQs are slightly higher, this is probably the reason they do better at some activities. but if you are good player you can own the avg asian day in day out

I thouhgt about this. You then have to wonder if stars will continue to promote maccau next year, or give up all together.
