I've been living off poker for quite a while. I beat $2/$4 NL for around $100 hour, that was my 'home'. Over the past year or so I have been playing less and less. I moved to $1/$2 and was still beating that for around $100/hour after 50k hands.

Due to other stuff, I played the bare minimum, enough to get by but I was still eating in to my roll.

Over the past few weeks, I have been trying to get things back together, but just when I most need the money, I seem to be going through a bad patch. I am now trying to grind it on $NL50, but not getting anywhere unfortunately.

I am playing on Party, and it seems that even NL50 is a nit fest.

I have been out of the poker 'scene' for ages, but I'm coming here now hoping I can get some advice from you guys. I...

i) Don't know if I should stay at Party
ii) Don't know if I should consider things like getting staked
iii) Really need $$$ !!
iv) Don't know what to do!

Thanks for any input

the games get tougher, so you need to get better and better to make the same amount of money. When you start playing, it's easier to get better just by experience, because you were so bad when you started off. As you get better, you need to put more time and effort into studying the game away from the table in order to improve.

You should be spending a good amount of your time trying to get better, possibly as much as you spend playing. Read 2p2/post on 2p2/join some training sites/hire a coach, whatever combination of those works best for you.

I kind of wondered that, too.

In fact, how do you make $100/hr at 2/4 or 1/2, whether or not you support yourself. Is that possible?

If you "really need money!" suck it up and get a job.

players who "need" the money always play WAY WAY WAY worse then they're capable of....remember this lesson in the future

As played.....hmmmm....get your butt to work and GRIND! like you've never grinded before. If that doesn't work, get a part time job imo.

The games have gotten much tougher and its no longer "easy" money. The game is played much differently then it was a few years back. The level of aggression is also way stepped up.

I suggest getting a part time job while attempting to re-learn the game. Work for a few month delivering pizzas or whatever until you get your game back to winning levels.

Get a security job. You can probably find something entry level easily enough if you don't have a criminal record. This will also give you plenty of free time to read some books, study, etc to improve your game while getting a real paycheck to do it.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping the general consensus wouldn't be 'the games are far tougher' Are they really far far tougher?

By playing like 10 hours a month or something. Anyway, I did that for far too long, then found myself NEEDING money, as my outs were more than my ins. I return to the tables properly, and hit a bad patch, and now here I am. Also that $100/hour was over 50k hands so it may not be that high, but it's certainly close. My $2/$4 hourly was usually hovering around the $75-$100 mark.

Yeah, I'm more than willing to put in the grind if it gets me back on top of things. My main worry is that I may not be good enough to beat contemporary poker. But if I have those kind of win-rates, up until a few months ago, I can't go from that to being a losing player so quickly surely.

My plan is to be smarter about things like finding soft sites, RB, bonuses etc...all things that I have been neglecting while away from the 'scene'. Even if I'm a break even player, $20/hour in RB is still a wage

btw, if a table is super "nitty" .. just raise every hand. When I play on Cake, I dig up a table that has like a < 15% see flop percent, then i join, and just raise every hand, sometimes you can steal 20-30 blinds this way before anyone even decides to look you up, unless someone picks up a decent pocket along the way.

When I said 'even if I'm a break even player', I meant even if in the unlikely possibility that poker has changed so radically in the past few months that I have gone from a successful player to a break even player, getting a good RB deal will still give me a wage.

Party's low-med limit SNGs seem to have become a huge reg-fest recently too (apart from these last two nights were it was really fishy - possibly WSOP-induced donks?). It sounds like the micro NL games may also have turned bad and it might be worth looking for other sites to play at (Party's "soft" days seem to be a thing of the past now).

I'm not sure if you were questioning this particular posters ability to make that much, or the idea of making that much per hour. Let me assure you it is very possible to average 100+ per hour at 200NL and 200+ at 400NL, even in this day and age.
