Supernova Elite confusion

I understand that for Supernova your points reset at the end of each year. Does that mean that if you are going for Supernova Elite that you have to start January 1st and that the VPPs you accrued during the previous year do no count toward your Supernova status?
I bet this has been asked a dozen times, so I apologize, but I'd really appreciate someone shedding some light on this for me.

So, for example, if I reach Supernova by December '13 which carries on until at least March '14, I still need to accrue 1,000,000 VPPs between Jan. '14 and Jan. '15... Correct? The 100,000 VPPs I accrused to reach Supernova will be washed away, but my Supernova status will remain as long as I meet the monthly quota, right?

^ Yes correct again. VPP points reset to zero at the end of each calendar year.

Thanks guys. I'm also fuzzy on the reward system. For example, the VIP calculator says if I earn X number of points, my rewards will be, say, $120,000. Does that mean they'll just send me a $120,000 check?
