I need to stay in China for quite a long time and what happend if I need to update the software? Is there any other ways can solve this things out?

How about Fulltilt or anyother sites? Is speed good enough to run 4--6tables?

You can access Full Tilt here no problems. I guess for pokerstars you might need to use a VPN to get the updates or get someone to send them to you. Regarding the internet you can get up to 4mb in Beijing at least and it's fairly reliable, of course you get the odd disconnect.

I am alrdy familiar with the legality of online poker in China.

I am planning on working in Beijing for a year or 2. Being a Canadian citizen, I'm wondering if there is a way to play in China on sites like Full Tilt, Stars, Cake poker and such.

I've asked several people and some of them told me that as long as I cash out to my Canadian bank account, everything should be fine.

Another concern is the internet, is it possible to bypass the great firewall?

thanks in advance.

Hey i life in Bejing almost 4years now, and I'm German.

Yes there is no problem on playing Full tilt and stars. Its absolutely fine. Cake poker as well. If you wanna cross the big firewall, just buy a personal VPN and than you can excess everything

Hope this helps you.

So if certain things are censored and they catch you with your own personal VPN what happens? Do they chop your hands off?

Under the current law, there is no legal gambling in China, either on or off-line. The only officially sanctioned form is a national lottery, but even that is not available to play over the Internet thanks to a rash of scam websites that appeared and ripped off the Chinese citizenry by selling them fake lottery tickets.

However, this is not entirely true - the Chinese government realises that people like to gamble, and so it turns a blind eye to the burgeoning casino industry in Macau. Like Las Vegas in America, if Chinese citizens want a full casino experience, they have to jump on a plane and fly to where it is legal.
Like in US, China still prohibits online gambling there but some China lawmakers are trying to have a hearing about legalizing online gambling.

They don't ban online gaming but they encourage us to play at subscription based sites which I don't really prefer to play. They just force banks to follow the internet gaming regulations which is actually chaotic/BS law "UIGEA".

Don't they prohibit gambling transactions such as deposits/withdraws?
I've heard people say they have had their bank account shutdown for trying to deposit a check.

Yeah c'mon man this is the land of freedom! The US gov't would never involve themselves in something like that.

I had heard that China was cracking down on online poker. Is this true. I want to play but don't want to get a 'knock' at my door.
Also, can anyone recommend any live games?
Thanks
jesse

where did you hear that?
all i've heard is
'Chinese government blocked their internet connection to gambling sites. Most people use something called VPN to connect to PS instead.'

lol this is actually not bad first post

As for OP the way things stand right now you are probably more likely to get a knock on the door in USP ie united states of police then you are in China for playing online poker.
And honestly Id be more affraid of US police comming up with god knows what then I would of chinese.
You are also way more likely to end up in jail in USA, again after just about anything cop comes up with, considering the mess the US law is right now, then you are in China, just food for thought.
But hey I live in EB ie European bureaucracy so its easy for me to give advice. Here they just tax you to death as opposed to throw in you in prison or execute you.

What? I don't think you understand how the US justice system works. Nobody who can afford a lawyer goes to jail unless they commit the most heinous crimes.
