It depends of the type of debit card. Most VISA debit cards can easily be overdrawn. The way these cards work, money is not instantly withdrawn from your account when you use the card, intstead an authorization hold is put on your account for the amount of the purchase. The actual withdrawal of funds occur later, and there is a period of time between when the authorization hold disappears and the withdrawal of funds take place. These cards can also be used "offline" where there is no checking of availability of funds at the time of purchase.
