Just got laid off... Just got laid off...

I just had the ****tiest day. Just got laid off work. We did not get any warning at all or any signs leading to it.

Anyway, to cut story short - We were offered unacceptable packages and while my attorney is working it out, I'm thinking of playing lots of DoNs till I find a new job.

I play $20.80 sets of 9 at a time. Should I increase the tables, or I should be able to clear a decent hourly rate. I'm not concerned about the ROI at the moment. Just to be able to grind, so I won't have to dig into my saving. THIS CURRENT ECONOMY SUCKS!!!!

Sorry, I needed to scream.

Any pointers will do. Thanks in advance. Oh, and please if you have gone through this, or you know someone who has, please share.

I got laid off in 06 and started grinding 400NL and was making good money and the UIGEA hit and the games got tougher and I hit a downswing and killed myself.

Just quickly, if you're going from being a recreational player to being a pro, it's not an insignificant jump. Unfortunately you don't have much choose so here are some essentials:

1. Be realistic. If you made $10/hour before, don't expect to make more now.
2. Don't get in over your head. You're at the skill level you're at. If you try to jump into more or higher limit games then your ready for, you can lose a lot in a hurry.
3. Pros work on their games a lot. Obv your first priority should be to find another job, but you're still likely to have a lot more free time then usual. Use that time to become a better player. Join a video site. Post hands and reply to others. Tackle spots you don't get.

Thanks 2J4U and Leader. I would have liked to find another job soon, but because we were given an option to relocate to another State (less than 2 weeks to decide), we're not getting the same packages that they would give to people that are being laid off. So, our case is that we didn't get enough notice to find jobs, so until we reach a decision, my lawyer has advised me not to seek another job. At least not soon, to support my case.

biggest thing is don't get lazy. its a lot harder to work when no one is forcing you to than most people who haven't been self employed would think.

Well if you can play about 15 dons an hour on avg. at 7% ROI thats a little over $20 an hour. Pretty good for sitting in front of the computer. But you will have to keep on loading them up once the other ones are over to keep up 9 games going. I usually keep the newer games on the left side of my screen to make it easier on me.

I 100% agree. Its very easy to get lazy when you work for yourself. If you can make yourself play a certain nember of hours of certain number of tourneys a day or week and stick to it you will be ok. After you play 2000 of them you will have a good idea of your ROI then you can set up a plan to plan enough of tourneys to hit your amount you want. I found that its better for me to set a volume goal rather than a money goal.

yeah seriously pretty doubtful you are a girl.

but anyways you should know or be able to figure out an approximate hourly rate or your ROI.

but if you put in enough hours (and your a winning player) you should be able to replace some or most of your income. grinding sit and goes is not fun but it can be profitable.

Here's some advice from someone who has been through several of these. Most of the people who use lawyers when laid off get nothing from it. (A rough estimate, off the top of my head, would be that less 10% ever get anything for their effort and expense--maybe a lot less than 10%.) You need the lawyer to tell you right away if you have any recourse and exactly how you would pursue it and what outcome you should expect. You need to consult with a lawyer who knows employment law in your state, country, planet, wherever--a wills/deeds/drunk driving/torts/generalist is worse than useless. Most corporations today have employment lawyers who know how to do a layoff--it is not like layoffs are a new idea.

The offering transfer with short notice is a cheap trick, but a good employment lawyer should not have to do much homework to determine if that is an acceptable offer. Your (former) employer can make it a long and painful process to get anything from them (though some are capable of recognizing a screw up and will try to get out quickly and cheaply).

Get it right,

I am currently`in the same boat as you. I, also, am a girl. I was a mortgage banking account executive and my company closed and filed bankruptcy owing me 45k over a yr ago. I have been doing some contract processing and odd jobs and working on my game since then. There has still not been any solid job offer. This isn't as easy to do as one would think. I switched my focus from sitngo to cash and personally like it better. However, it is a catch 22 because I need a bigger roll to generate more money safely and take out cash for expenses also at this point.

I downsized my bills and housing CONSIDERABLY and got my total monthly outgo down to 2k per month bare bones. I was only just learning poker when this all happened to me so I honestly am just at the point where I feel I have a real clue of what I am doing, after much study and practice. I have a positive roi in very small stakes sngs and mtts as alexsinn on stars but have always made more at cash thus far. I have focused more on cash as welll too though. I feel great when all goes well, then a downswing hits and its mentaly brutal, lol.

If I did not do other things on the side, right now I could not just make it from poker yet. I urge you to not try to depend soley on this income yet at this point. Do a lot of bonus whoring to get your roll bigger and use for small extras.

If you dont mind my asking, on average how much are you generating daily doing your sets of 20.00 DONs? I think I would become suicidal playing that many of those, so kudos to you.

Hang in there. We will all get through this one way or the other. But, based on what I know of what is still outstanding on the secondary market, it is going to get way worse before it gets better.

I have lurked here daily for the last 2 years but rearely post. So yes guys, there ARE girls on 2+2 ,lol. I have learned more of the inner workings of the male psyche here than just about anywhere else, lol.

I was laid off once (dot com company went near busto) and also fired once (I pretty much deserved it). Neither time did the idea of suing my former employer cross my mind. I didn't have a contract saying I'd work there X years or anything like that, so in my mind they can fire me if they want it's their company. I just went out and found work as best I could.

Why exactly are you involving an attorney? How did they wrong you?
