There's a nuclear standard in Colorado for N. American casino's...

That's why most places with tons of people in close proximity to each other are generally very cold. Think jails, schools, casino, hospitals etc...... Germs love warm environments, so keeping AC on at 65 degress or less keeps people healthy and coming back. Casinos would be dead if you got sick everytime you went to play, getting the flu for 6 hours of card play is NOT worth it.
You're with the CDC. Amirite?

They pump perfume in the air. That's why the Venetian always smells like... well the Venetian.

Don't believe me? Look at the clientele list.

They only care about keeping you there longer. Warm makes you sleepy.

Same reason that you never see a clock in a casino. They don't want to remind you that you are tired and should be home in bed.

The results of experiments in guinea pigs have revealed that aerosol transmission of influenza virus is most efficient in cold and dry conditions, and completely blocked at warm or humid conditions.
I heard about this research on NPR a couple months ago, but this is the first obvious link Google pointed me at. Alas, you can still get it from contact transmission (wash, wash, wash those hands).

Cold keeps people awake.

That's mostly it.

Germs don't survive as long in the cold.

It has nothing to do with germs. As it has been pointed out, the cold dry air actually helps viruses.

If they cared at all about germs, they would wash the chips and have the dealers wear surgical gloves or use hand sanitizer every 30 minutes or something like that.

It's all about keeping you awake and gambling. Everything from the carpet pattern to the layout of the casino to the temperature is well researched.

It's done elsewhere too but for different purposes.

I used to work at Chi-Chi's mexican restaraunt and the carpets and chairs etc. were chosen to get you in and get you out left soon after eating and they could get more customers in.

Casino's want the opposite. They want you to stay forever at a state of 'heightened alertness' where you aren't sure what time it is or even where you exactly are but you are more 'ready to gamble'. The Travel channel had a show about all of this stuff. I love that shiat.

This is correct. Another example, the chairs and booths in fast food restaurants are intentionally uncomfortable. They don't want people hanging out there, they want you to eat and get out.

So now explain the uncomfy chairs found at most poker tables! Why are they trying to get us out?

Poor HVAC management and/or controls.

Usually colder in the early morning hours when the throngs of people have left and we are still there stuck and waiting for the donut cart to come by.

do you know what happens when you put hundreds of people in a room without cool air circulation? it gets all hot steamy and musky. It becomes extremely unbearable and is 125% guaranteed tilt after 20-30 minutes.

Casino/Poker rooms are kept cold to keep the environment fresh which leads to happy longer staying, higher rake paying players..

As has been stated before, the germ thing seems like pure nonsense. It's not as if the air temperature inside the casino is THAT cold. We're talking mid 60's most likely. Not exactly a refrigerator.
