At about 1:30 there’s a big hand brewing between Seat 5 and Seat 9. Seat 5 is first to act, but as soon as the Dealer flips the Turn card, Seat 9 says “check” out of turn. Dealer informs him of his mistake, tells Seat 5 action is on him, etc. Routine except I notice that Seat 9 had actually turned a full house.
Anyway, you can probably see where this is going. An hour later, there’s another big hand, and once again Seat 9 “accidentally” checks out of turn…and when we get to showdown we see he turned a nut flush.
So 2 questions:
1. What SHOULD I do as a player after that? Call the floor? Tell the dealer?
2. Would anything result in Player 9 experiencing any consequences for his angle shooting? I wanted him to be punished—even a stern warning would make me happy!
I've seen this 'plenty' .. and usually the Player is figured out very quickly by the rest of the table, especially when showing up with the nuts after doing so.
1) Yes, file this away and don't fall for it until the V starts to show air/weak holdings.
2) Depending on the room you can talk to Dealers/Floors all you want, but at the start of each day Poker Players typically get a clean slate and start to get warnings all over again. Shorter leash? Sterner warnings? Sure, but I've never seen anyone get into 'serious' trouble for this particular spot.
TBH the V is actually hurting themselves by not being able to bet out. LOTS of Players have seen this act before and know the 'weak is strong' message and will check to force the next street.
3) If you are a Reg (or even not) you could engage in forced conversation with the V letting them and the rest of the table know about your observation. "Hey, you really missed some value when you checked OOT, eh?"
It is an interesting spot as to what you should hold to yourself and how/when you should call out another Player. Is the game really being harmed somehow? If you are both Regs then I would just keep this intel to myself and use it to your 'advantage' by NOT betting out when it happens until you start to see where the V is wanting free cards when doing so. You could even call them out during a hand that you are actually in with them. But again, poker is a game of information and if this Player wants to give away value (consistently) them just let them do so. GL
In this case, I would call it out after the hand. I have mixed feelings about commenting during the hand.
For other angles that involve ambiguous action (like placing a bet in a way that can be interpreted multiple ways), I will usually ask the dealer to clarify the action (whether I am next to act or not). But this is a case where you are actually trying to provide insight into the other players hand, so I would likely not comment during the hand
If I was sitting next to a player new to the table and I didn’t recognize him as a reg that already knew what this guy was up to, I might say something because I hate anglers. If it was a reg who knew him or someone that had been at the table foe this before, I probably don’t. I don’t mind ruining the angle shooters angle and I think speaking up is better for the integrity of the game. I would probably also ask the floor to talk to him about acting out of turn because he could also use the fact that everyone knows what he used to do to change it up with a draw for instance now that his secret is out
