What does it mean when you table your hand? What does it mean when you table your hand?

I hear some people say this and i know it means you gave up the pot and fold. Can someone explain in detail what it means? I assume it is you knock on the table to say good hand and flip over your cards? I read a thread about someone at Taj who said they tabled their hand when they mean to call and they lost the pot because of it.

Tabling a hand means that, once all action is complete, you turn your hand over to make yourself eligible to win the pot. You are not giving up the possibility of winning. When you see that you're beat at showdown and choose not to expose your cards, that's called "mucking" your hand.

In your example from the Taj, it sounds like the player turned over his cards without calling the bet to him. Apparently the forward motion of his cards was interpreted as a fold, killing his hand (I'd rather not derail the thread by commenting on the ruling).

To be precise, tabling yyur hand is the aact of paacing both caards face up on the table. All action must be complete.

Once properly tabled as described above, the hand is live and if it is the best hand, it should win the pot.

If you have heard of "cards speak" it means that tabled hands speak for themselves. A winning hand cannot be killed if all action is complete and the hand was properly tabled.
