Unfortunately, promotions are necessary to keep most rooms going. That being the case, High hands seem to have less affect on the game itself . Bad Beats are bad as explained by several others here, free rolls, splash pots, hot seats, rake back and other time based or "being present" type promos tend to bring in players that are sitting there just to hit the promo and not really contributing to the game (other than the blinds). After almost 30 years of running poker rooms, I haven't found the perfect promo. As far as I can tell there is no "Magic Pill". What draws players in one area can be a complete dud in another. All you can do is try some things and see what works where you are at
Interesting that a) you don't think HH promos attract folks sitting there just to hit the promo and b) have less affect on the game.

I can take you to plenty of rooms where the "minute" the HH promo ends for the day (or just drops significantly in value), tables break faster than they can be recombined. And while the HH is going on everyone limps with any pair or suited connectors (including 2 gappers) just hoping to hit a flop. When HH is $1k+ every 30 min or less, it definitely impacts the games. And then there is the whole, how slow can I play this hand in case it hits so it is in the next HH period with a chance to win since not big enough now. Turns yawn fest into sleep fest.

IMO, hot seats have the least impact on the game if the amount isn't too much. But for any promo to do what the house wants (bring in players) it almost by definition has to have some impacts on the game (good and bad).

BBJP, again IMO, don't really draw in players until they start getting high. But initially they have very little impact on the games.

Probably hot seat is best. It punishes the people who lock up a seat and just wander around half the time. It doesn't distort the action or attract nits like high hand.

The room I currently play in has high hand bonuses, but they also allow rabbit hunting if you have a set or 4 to a straight flush; that way you don't have to slowplay for fear of not making a high hand by the river, and it doesn't kill the action or affect play so much.

I play in a room that has regular $500 room high hand payouts at 2/5 every hour and sometimes they are $1000. The high hand is shared among all running cash game tables (1/2 tables get a $200 or sometimes $500) payout. There are generally enough tables running that you need quads or better to win and often small quads aren't enough. I find that it doesn't really alter play all that much and it's a nice hit for someone who plays often in the room.

That being said, I also like splash pots but it would be nice to put a twist on it so everyone has a chance. Maybe $50 or $100 splash pots at every table?
