I mentally kill myself everytime I hear it. Not sure why I care, but it just sounds ******ed.
Apologize to your "******ed" dealer. This is the best use of the term, to disambiguate between the total raised amount, or the raise itself. As a floor, you really should strive for a slightly higher hit rate. Your customers and your dealers deserve your best effort.

Why not just say

"18 total"

like a normal person?

I believe it does have a certain meaning in Poker terminology

(although a lot of the boggers I play with still call a straight a "run")

This is my take as well though I'm not a dealer.

My hope would be that the dealer would try to clarify the action before anybody else had a chance to act. This would allow the raise to stand. But personally I would never expect the dealer to do this. I also don't like to rely on other people to bail me out of situations that are unnecessary.

Once a Floor comes over it will always be ruled a call because "straight" is not one of the key words that universally means something in poker.

I also agree with everyone in this thread that advises OP to say "raise" or declare the amount of the bet. Or both.

What I try to do as a player is to never throw out a single oversized chip. In a tournament situation I would throw out 1,025 or 1,100 rather than just 1,000. Sometimes its unavoidable and a verbal declaration must be articulated clearly.

Here is another approach that works well. If using a single chip and you wish to make a verbal announcement to raise (or to bet less than the full chip). Hold the chip out toward sthe betting area but do not release it. Make your verbal declaration and do not release the chip until the dealer has repeated your action correctly.

This way if you are misunderstood or not heard you made any physical action by the release of the chip. If that was done in the case at hand the player would be holding the chip in his hand while the dealer was clarifying what does "straight" mean .... instead of dealing saying its a call because he released a single chip into the pot.

I never said it was wrong nor did I ever tell any dealer not to say it.

I simply said it sounds ******ed to me.

Is it ok for me to have my own opinion?

BTW this dealer says it whether its a raise or a bet. You can be first to act after the flop and bet $16. She will say sixteen straight.

I say "straight" after a raise probably a third of the time. Every now and again I catch myself saying it after an opening bet, and I feel dumb. Sorry.

I have no problem with the term. But I also call people "boss". Folks don't seem to recognize that term, either. I don't know if it's due to region or time.

I hate being called boss. Maybe if I actually was the boss I wouldn't mind.
