Trip Report - Soaring Eagle, Mt Pleasant, MI Trip Report - Soaring Eagle, Mt Pleasant, MI

I have heard that the poker games have recently changed at Soaring Eagle so yesterday I went to go check out the action. It was about a two hour drive from Detroit.

Once I got there around 2:30pm they were opening up a 2/5 NL game. So I bought in for 1k ( the max) and sat down. Most people bought in for $500 or less so I didn't feel so nervous for sitting with 1k, even though it did represent a big chunk of my bank roll.

On the very first hand there were several limpers and I came in with 5s6s in lp. Flop came 10 high rainbow and I had a gut shot. Guy bets $15, four people call, I call and the turn card brings me the nut straight and a flush draw. Original bettor bets $50 - I get too excited and bet $150 and he folds. I had a good feeling about the day ahead of me.

About four hands later and again there are several limpers and I limp in LP with 10cQc. Flop comes 3sAh10d. It's checked around. Turn bring the 10s. Aggressive guy in the SB bets $60, another aggressive guy to my direct right raises to $120, I flat call, and button calls (although I didn't realize it at the time because I was seated to the direct right of the dealer.) The river brings the beautiful Qd, checked to me and I bet $200, button goes all-in for $400+ and I call. He tables 10/7o and I'm up about $800 in less than 30 min.

Now, I'm sitting here thinking now what do I do, I just drove 2hrs. I told myself before I came that I would be pissed if I lost and had to drive 2 hrs back home. So I was motivated. But getting good cards, at the right time, with the right action also helps. Poker is an easy game when your decisions are easy.

So I decided to play fairly tight while the two agressive guys were at the table. A few hours later they left and things tightened up a bit with a lot less pre-flop raising. I moved to the other end of the table and soon thereafter the following hand comes up: Folded to me in the cutoff and I raise to $20 with JJ. Buton calls and a nitting old man makes it $70. I like my position and my implied odds. I call and button calls. Flop comes J high with two diamonds. As I suspect old man bets $100, I raise to $200, and button folds. Old man calls. Turn bring a 9, making the board pretty drawy. Old man checks and I put him all in for like $400. He thinks, and folds AA, face up. No suprise there and a nice little pot. I swear I hit more sets with JJ then any other pair.

After that the cards dried up and I folded a lot and only picked up a few peanuts. I threw in a few straddles and bluffs to try to lossen things up. There were a good mix of people at the tables and several calling stations, but no one overly agressive. I pinpointed a few really tight nitty players and pushed them off few hands. But overall, it was simply one of those dream sessions with no tough decions. I ended up cashing out at 12:30am for $2,300 (+$1,300) - my biggest single session in a year.

The poker room itself was pretty big with 18 tables, most of which were full. Many 1/2 NL ($400 max) and 3/6 limit tables. Maybe 1 6/12 game and the 1 2/5 NL game going. The dealers were the best I have seen outside of Vegas. Someone told me they once had the "best dealers in the country" but then all went to vegas. Not sure about that one, but they were all VERY fast and we had no misdeals. They also now take pot rake and not the time rake which is nice. They also have a BBJ and you also get $1 per hr for comps which is nice - but you can't redeem them immediately - so I still had to pay for dinner. The casino itself was a pretty basic indian casino - nothing special. They did have a pretty big hotel attached and an entertainment center or some kind of ballroom - so the building itself was pretty huge.

Based on my experience I would probablly go back there maybe a few times a year. Overall from what I could gather the games were pretty soft. It is an 18 and up casino so a lot of college kids mixed in. They are also having an HPT event there this August which is a great tournament.

How long does it take to get seated there usually and how many 1/2 NL tables do they run?

Great Trip Report! I go to school at MSU so it's tempting/profitable/+EV for me to head up there a lot. The Eagle is pretty awesome. Softest games I've ever seen. Eagle>Trippers>Windsor>Greektown>Motor City. I'm actually heading up there Tuesday!

It really depends on the time. Use the search function for details, but in general on the weekends 3-4 3/6 tables, 1-2 6/12 tables, 4-5 1/2 NLHE, 1-2 2/5 tables.
