they're trying to screw tournament players out of $276000 today.

the $570 buy-in $400000 guarantee made it three starting flights (out of six) before they canceled the tournament and announced they would chip chop the surviving day 2 players. but now they want to chip chop us for $124000 ($500 * total entries) instead of the guaranteed $400000. if ignoring the guarantee isnt enough, they are also keeping in full their $70 fee for the tournament without even delivering to us over half of the product for that price (dealing and hosting more than half of the tournament).

this seems VERY wrong and fraudulent. i am personally out ~$8000 by this decision, and the 48 of us are combined out $276000 (!!!) by this decision. what can we do?

even if they were contractually obligated to honor the guarantee (which they are not)... force majeure baby.

Have you seen the news the last few days? there are few issues worldwide.

After spending the past few days in a poker tournament, unless you wore latex gloves and full on hazmat respirator, the 8K that you are "out" might be the least of your worries.

You do understand why the cancelled the tourny, right? Aside from airborne infection, virus lives on hard surfaces (cards/chips ) for days.

Yeah you're not getting $400000 when they couldn't even finish the starting flights there buddy. I don't think stealing means what you think it means.

Yes, this seems like a totally fine option to me all things considering. The only thing I could potentially see you have a legitimate claim to is for part of the $70 to be refunded as well.

This is one of those things were poker players become disillusioned. There is obvious unforseen circumstances that caused this cancellation. Why in the world would we expect a casino to just give $270,000 away in the midst of a perceived crisis

While I understand ops frustration, hmm I can’t really see holding them
Up to the gtn if they didn’t complete all 6 flights without very odd circumstances. Tournament sheets almost always have in small black print “able to alter, change, cancel tournament”. This fine print really allows the casino to forego a gtn if they see fit prior to the start (or maybe even after).

Btw I’m in AC for a tourny series now. Borgata has a sweet little mtt series with some solid gtns for smaller events. Sadly they cancelled the gtns and I played a tourny today that would generally get 120–180 players and it got 79 after the gtn slash / coronavirus issues. Wanna say the gtn would need 154 players to breakeven however we see half of that due to what’s going on and gtn cancel. I expect cardroom action to be slightly shitty the coming weeks. Borg has 15 cash tables now when I wanna say normally they would have 40+

If the tournament costs $570 for you, how are you out $8,000? How much money did they offer you?

They did an adjusted ICM for everyone who bagged and paid out all of the money they collected (approximately $125K). The adjustment was that even if you bagged only 1 BB, you were still assured of getting back more than your buy-in.

Also, every player who registered in the tournament, whether they bagged or not, was given a voucher for a free room in the guitar hotel.

From a structure sheet from a different tournament at the Seminole Hard ROck

"Management reserves the right to alter, change, or cancel this tournament.Management will not be held responsible in the event of typographical errors or misinformation on the website or printed material pertaining to this event, and players will have no claim in these matters.Tournament Director’s decisions are final."

So, yeah, the tournament was cancelled. I can't see a guarantee being honored if a tournament is cancelled, especially if it is for a legitimate reason

They should have given the people that busted a buyin back. You got more than you deserved.

Your gripe is legit, but your perspective is no better than that of a squirrel that is on fire. You went to an Indian reservation to take advantage of them as the coronavirus was spreading at an exponential rate, and are upset that you are only winning a few thousand dollars? You wanted something for free from a business that is about to get fiscally destroyed as the country is asking for small favors from regular people like you. Next time we need a favor, you can just shove a pencil up my ass and say you're welcome.
