Rules question - cards found on floor during hand

This my first posting, I need some help?. last night at our local club we were playing our wed game of Texas Holdem , cards were dealt, 200 chips was the call it was raised to 400 I called , put in 400. The flop came not good for me I folded. Game went on for one more round a bet was mafe for 1000 and called. Then someone said there are 2 cards on the floor. One very loud member of our group said the game was void and they could have there chips back but now me as I had folded. I said I should have my chips as I started the game in good faith. what do you think ??

re: Rules question - cards found on floor during hand

Room rules vary. In general, cards discovered on the floor or otherwise missing from the deck would not cause the hand to be voided, it would play on, and no one gets money refunded. After the hand completes you can count the deck down or swap in a new deck while a floor makes sure the previous deck is completely intact and has all 52 cards.

One possible exception would be if cheating were somehow suspected, that would result in a misdeal and a voided hand, but I'm not sure how it would benefit anyone to drop cards on the floor. (And it happens almost never in a public casino or cardroom.)

If, however, they rule that the hand is voided, then all money is returned to the players, including you and anyone else who was involved. They don't get to chop your money up.

Yeah, that's what "voided" means. Doing anything else is some kind of shenanigans. If they declared the hand "void" based on the cards on the floor and then carved up your money, you got screwed, my friend.

Part of the problem with playing at a club with ambiguous rules is that when something like this happens, all hell breaks loose. It's like the worst of both worlds between a home game and a formal casino/cardroom. In the absence of any real leadership, often the loudest mouths get their way.

This is at a home game. Right?

Best to just play the hand out. This will piss off a couple of "sacred order of the cards fools" but they will either deal with it or not. If the crew insists on voiding the hand , then ALL money/chips from everyone dealt in must be returned.

Very unlikely a normal casino card room is involved here, but who knows for sure.

I think you should just continue the hand. A guy declaring something is on the floor means less than a fart. Who knows how long the cards have been there?

The reason the hand plays on is that we don't want to give a player a freeroll. If he sees [or puts] two cards out of play he could play on and try to win the pot ... but if he doesn't win he just says "oh look some cards on the floor .... give me back my bets"

Sounds a little unlikely, BUT in your long experience you likely have seen somebody do just that, maybe more than once.

No I haven't seen it. But I have dealt to many players who would do it if the opportunity arose, and a few who would make the opportunity arise if they thought they could get away with it.

I think even honest players might think twice if they had the nuts on the river in a huge pot and looked down and saw a card on the floor.....

It cannot work that way. Here's the reason...

I could just have a deck of cards in my pocket or steal two from the game and every time I lose a big pot I toss them on the floor and claim a misdeal and get my money back. (easier in a club/home game than in a casino obviously).

See Dinesh's post for the way it should've been handled.

Reminded me of this amazing story. Not with cards on the floor but a fouled hand. (language NSFW)

Re: Rules question - cards found on floor during hand

I've had something similar happen in a home game, someone actually had their cards from the previous hand(but different deck) on the table behind their chips. Someone noticed it and thought the hand should be cancelled. It was easy to see that it was a different deck though they were just a new player and forgot to throw there hand in.

What ended up being the ruling with cards found on the floor? Were they from the same deck? I haven't actually had that happen before. Where was this at?
