MTT tourney, friend that rode with me gets moved to my table randomly. Long story short, he flops straight, I turn the nuts and end up knocking him out after shoving on the river. Question is how do you guys handle situations like that?

Laugh it off and buy him a drink/dinner.

Unless you did a victory dance and five fist pumps when it happened.

It could have been worse, you could have ridden with him and he might have left your sorry ass behind.

J/K

It happens, hopefully your friend understands that you did the only thing you could do and play like he was a stranger.

But this is one of the few times when such behavior is acceptable at a poker table.

I handle the situation by bragging about how I outplayed him and he should respond by calling you a luckbox.

Laugh at him and needle him all the way home IMO

Just don't ask for gas money on the way home.

I guess you guys were planning on chopping the tourney?

If not, you do whatever it was you had already planned to do when one of you busted hours before the other.

You don't soft play friends, especially not in a tournament. Some of my biggest casino pots have been from home game buddies who couldn't let go of their hands. That's poker.

Never soft play anybody , if u cash in the tourney u take him for a dinner and of course explain to him ( and to all of your friends ) that his chips made it possible for u to run that deep ITM

If your friend called your shove he was trying to knock you out. You have nothing to apologize for.

Ever since my friend check raised me in a tourney at Binions a couple years ago, I have learned to LOVE busting friends out of tournaments or felting them in a cash game!!!!

Kicking your best friends ass in poker is the best feeling you will ever have, well almost. Talking about it later with the rest of your crew is also very high on the list. Agree with the buy him dinner thing if you cash. Always keep in mind that , on the felt, your best friend is after your chips, ALL of them.

if the friend you knocked out does anything besides laughing about it, hes a shi**y friend. if he tries to make you feel bad about it, f him.

Scream "SHIP IT!!!! WHO IS YER DADDY!!!!" and then do the Yukon Cornelius dance from "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer".

Seriously though. It happens. Especially in tournies. You played right, and he called you down with less than the nuts. His loss. He should be cool, unless he is a total asshat.

Why is this even a question? There's nothing you could have done differently. If you just call with the nuts you are soft playing him. Your all in against a friend screamed "I HAVE THE NUTS!!!!" He chose to call anyway.

Did he try to make you feel bad afterwards?

Exactly.
If anyone gets a wiff of a softplay, you both could be in trouble.

if, I'm going to a tourney with a friend we usually agree on a percent swap anyways.

In a tourney, you play your hardest against everybody, period.

It's a different question in a cash game. It happens every day where a couple of civilians show up in the game and it's obvious they are buddies. The rest of the table knows they aren't likely to clash in a big pot, and it's fine because they are there to have fun and probably aren't too good.

In my case, most of my friends are pretty good players, so at a cash table, I'm much less likely to play a big pot with them. This is also true of every other good player. It has nothing to do with soft play and everything to do with trying to exploit big edges rather than small ones.

Op, I'm concerned you feel guilt here. It was a cooler hand, you played it right, he played it right (maybe, unless he foolishly slow-played and let you get there cheap). Sucks, but what you gonna do? Collude and cheat?

Def letme get there cheap, I bet flop and he only called. But no guilt whatsoever, of course I let him hear about it, just was more Interested in hearing of how y'all play against friends Ar the table. I've seen a lot of people soft play each other which would never happen with my
Group so I was just Interested in hearing
Some other opinions. Thanks for the responses

Disagree.

It's perfectly acceptable for a good friend to call you a fish and the nut worst ever, but still be the guy who shows up at 3 am to help you in a fight.

When you play poker with friends, that friendship is on hold when you're in hands together. When you come out of the hand, you're friends again. Don't play them soft.
