Player asks for chip count, repeats wrong amount, bettors best reply? Player asks for chip count, repeats wrong amount, bettors best reply?

I have seen this happen a few times, never while I was in the hand but I've been wondering what the best thing to do would be:
Player A goes all in, B asks how much for, A or the Dealer counts it down and says e.g. $285. Player B goes into the tank and then says a wrong amount ($245? or $185?) Hoping to gauge player A's reaction. Ideally Player A would say nothing and the dealer would correct player B. But what if no correction comes and player B calls, then if he loses claims he should only be responsible for the amount he said because no one corrected him (never seen it come to this but would be kind of worried if I was A)?

So you're saying if player A says he has $1000, and player B repeats $100, and nobody corrects him, player B is only on the hook for $100?

Silly argument, but I guess once again, it all depends on the competency of the floor and the room.

If I understand this correctly, Player A is all in. Player B then says some wrong amount and then claims that's all he meant to call?

Nice try, angle shooter. Get your money in or get 86ed.

Only the worst floor in the world would let him keep his money. This would be such a huge angle, people would exploit it nonstop.

As far as rules, I think the rules state you are only entitled to a view, not an accurate count, so even if the dealer said about 990, and it was actually 1000, you'd still be on the hook for 1000.

ok thanks. I have seen people sometimes be able to take a call back if they misunderstood the amount but never once the cards were shown. Also I have never seen player try and get the smaller amount to stand, but sometimes after hearing the wrong amount the all in player will blurt out "No! $285!!" and player A will laugh and fold.

If it's a gross misunderstanding and pinnable on the dealer, the floor could rule he only has to pay the smaller amount. Like

Player A - All in
Player B - How much?
Dealer - $120
Player B - It looks like more, you sure it's only $120?
Dealer - Yes, I counted it. It is exactly $120...
Player B - OK, I call.
Player A - $1,000 for me baby ship it!
Player B - Here's your $120
Player A - FLOOR!!!

No. You are only entitled to view a person's (unbet) stack. You are entitled to an exact count of any bet amount, such as an all-in bet.

The dealer should be correcting the incorrectly stated amount. Failing that, any player who notices the error (including the other player, though I hear what you're saying about trying not to give away information) should correct it.

No. He is told that it is $X. He repeats $Y. And then the dealer says nothing. Player A says nothing.

Then Player B calls.

Player A is the angleshooter. My guess is a young punk "pro".

The Dealer sounds about normal.

Player A is not an angleshooter because he wants to keep his mouth closed and keep from giving away tells. Dealer can count down his stack and give an amount to Player B; it's up to the dealer to make sure Player B understands the amount, not Player A.
