Live Rake Question Live Rake Question

How much does the house rake in this situation.

ex: Wynn *9 handed 10%/$4 Max Rake ($3/$1 NL Game)
Say the BB checks, Small Blind calls, One Caller. Total pot $9
Check all the way to the river. Total pot $9.

What is the total rake? $1 or .90 Cents?

So its rounded up?

ex 2: Wynn *9 handed 10%/$4 Max Rake ($3/$1 NL Game)
Say BB raises to $9, Small Blind Calls, One Caller Total pot $27
Check all the way to river, Total pot $27

What is the total rake? $3 or $2.70 Cents? Rounded up right?

I guess my point is, its better to play pots above $40 since the rake is capped at $4??

Rounded to nearest whole dollar.

Keep in mind that there are still some places with coins on the table .... in those places the rake can be taken in less than whole dollars. A 10% rake with quarters on the table is going to take 75 cents on a $9 pot. And 50 cents if they have half dollars on the table.

More to the point, I believe if the pot were $31, it's a $4 rake.

I don't think I've ever played at a place that rounded up, it's always been truncated. So $0 rake on a $9 pot, $2 on $27, etc... (for places with no coins)

In Nevada it is against the law to rake more than 10%. If the pot is $31 then raking $4 would be illegal because it exceeds 10%.

At foxwoods they've changed to $1 on the flop. At places like this it's going to cost $1. So even if only the small blind calls the big blind and it gets checked down with $4 you're out a buck. They also have no flop no drop. Anywhere else with a rake a $9 pot would not have anything taken. In the case of a $27 pot only $2 should be taken.

In Cali where they drop and not rake, it's a different story.

Didn't realize this.

Interesting. I guess I don't see many $9 pots or don't pay close enough attention but I'm pretty sure at my "home" casino that they would rake $1 from a $9 pot.

The last time I was in Vegas (2009), rake was not exactly "10%."

It was $1 at $10, $2 at $20, $3 at $30 or $40, and $4 at $70. So a $9 pot would be raked $0 and a $27 pot would be raked $2.

The 2/5 rake varies all over the place by casino. Every room has a different rake schedule for NL2/5.

The 1/2 and 1/3 rakes are more consistently a flat 10%. Maybe there are slightly different rake schedules in a few rooms--not sure--but everywhere I usually play 1/2 it's just plain ol' 10% to the $4 or $5 cap.

But for a NL1/3 $9 pot, the rake is 0 at every room on the Strip I know of because none of them rake in less than $1 increments. Last Strip room I recall still using coins for rake was IP which used them on the 2/4 game and the 0.50/1.00 game, but not for 1/2. I don't know if that's changed lately.

I haven't been there in a long while, but the last time I played at Excalibur they had 50 cent pieces for the rake. And its been even longer since I played at Mandalay Bay, but I also seem to remember some sort of coin there.

Off Strip I think the cannery casinos have quarters on the table.

At Tampa Hard Rock, it's 10% with a $5 max but also a $1 minimum. So in a 1/2nl game if the SB calls and then the blinds check it down, it's $1 rake on a $4 pot.

The 5/10 kill limit game at Foxwoods used to be $2 at the flop, $1 at $30, and $1 at 80. Not sure if it's still the same since it barely runs now.

example 1. rake = $0

example 2. rake = $2

the schedule for rake in the wynn 1/3nl game is:

$1 @10
$1 @20
$1 @30
$1 @40

max rake is $4.

if there is no flop, the rake is $0, regardless of pot size.

MB gave up their coins two or three years ago at the same time they made a slew of other changes which notably improved the room. I haven't played at the castle since Dec 2011 and I really have no recollection either way whether they had coins on the tables then. I definitely recall the stacks of quarters from the old days but was thinking they'd nuked 'em; now I'm not so sure. Next time I stroll through to visit Krispy Kreme I'll check for quarters or halves at the poker tables.

The crazy thing about Excal's quarters was they didn't let them play post-flop. Players would rathole by slowly changing chips to change--people would be sitting at the table with $20 in quarters, not in play. When someone would ask why we'd get "this way I never go home broke" or "I save all the quarters I get here for my grandchildren" or some other silliness.

Thanks all for the answers. I think Zen.Master is correct at the Wynn.
I never knew in Nevada it was against the law to charge more then 10% of rake.

If the law didn't cap the rake, you wouldn't see a jackpot drop to fund promotions. The house could simply raise the rake and self fund the promotions with much more flexibility.

Never be scared to ask how the rake is taken, and confirm it's being done correctly.

If you think you see a mistake speak up.

Thought it was 10% max, meaning they can't take $1 on the $9, or take $3 on the $27.

When I started dealing we had quarters on the table. They played .... but you were allowed to take them off the table, some people played them many ratholed them.

But I had players so anxious to rathole them that they would trade chips for quarters to rathole. I had one guy who would buy in to the $2-$4 game for $20. Then if I changed out the big blind with quarters (we commonly did this to make it easier) before dealing, the guy would then reach over switch out the quarters with chips and rathole the quarters.

When I used to play at the Aladdin they used fifty cent pieces, which you could remove from the table. I would frequently remove the odd fifty cent piece, and ended up using my collected fifty cent pieces to buy into the employee event at the WSOP.

Maybe OT. Some operators of live electronic tables rake to the nickel or dime.

Why ? They can.

So greedy

Semi-related question. Does anyone know of a good online resource to look up what the rakes are at various cardrooms? Tried searching and didn't find anything.

Probably something that isn't posted online by the casinos, here's probably your best bet. Was there somewhere specific you were curious about?
