I'm spending a couple of months in SW Florida. The Ft Myers Greyhound Track advertises poker on TV, Has anyone been there, and is it worth a look?

It's a really nice room, they spread 1/2, 2/5, and 5/10 NLHE with $100 max.

Fairly large room with some nice tourneys, but I think the rake is a bit high. But I still play there a few days a week. Track is actually in Bonita Springs.

Ante Up magazine does an excellent job of covering the Florida poker rooms. www.anteupmagazine.com

the players are so bad it does not matter how high the rake is

Been there. I wouldn't discribe it as a 'nice room'. It's just a regular room. The crowd is ancient. The food is nothing short of horrible I would love to see a regular city hot dog stand at this place, as that would be a lot better. You can't walk anywhere either, you have to leave and drive.

$100 max buyin sucks. The players are terrible, but they are also generally very nitty. They rarely put any money in without TP or better. Every time I flopped a set and got action, someone else flopped top set. To make money, keep in mind that something is probably up when someone calls a $25 bet.

100 $ buy in sucks( agreed),the players are terrible (thats a good thing } the players are nitty( not really they just call alot another words just bet dont slow play) every time u flopped a set some flopped top set ( thats just bad luck . how many sets did u flop in 1 session playing live at 25 hands an hour ?) something is up when someone calls a 25$ bet. (no you are joking someone calls 25% of their buy in and you think some things up .)and as far as them not not calling with out having more than top pair thats not true they call with any pair .

If it's typical of most Florida poker rooms, they're calling stations to the extreme. There are two things most players in this state will rarely do postflop: Bet out with anything less than two pairs and fold anything better than K high or a backdoor draw.

I'm starting to think, actually, that this game might not be beatable in the long run with its outrageous rake and jackpot drops, especially if you figure in dealer tips.

How high of a rake is it for 1/2 NL $100 max?

For comparison, here in AC it's usually 10% up to a max of $4 per pot.

10% up to $5 plus a $1 jackpot drop. So most pots will get taxed for $6. Add a tip for every pot you win. You can see how I have serious doubts whether this game is beatable no matter how bad the competition is and how good you think you are. WPT does cruise ship seminars out of South Florida occasionally, and every now and then, a top pro will pass through. Several of them -- Clonie Gowen the most recent one -- say they wouldn't touch these games.

She isn't much to speak of.......

The games are beatable. Yes the rake is higher than most other places, but there is still enough terrible players to make it worthwhile.

I'm on vacation down here and plan on going tomorrow. Are you kidding me that the max buy-in for the 5/10 game is 10 big blinds!!!! LOLOLOL!!!! Lotta post-flop play there.

And the 1/2 game is nitty?? I'm thinking I'm better off playing limit holdem or O8.

I can tell you firsthand, they are definetly beatable.

Having said that, I wish three things.......

1. The $5 rake was less.
2. There were no jackpot.
3. I can learn to tip a tad less.

Per hour, I'm beating the 5-10 game the best, even with the $100 buy-in.

By the way, was just talking to a friend of mine today at Tampa Greyhound and he just got back from Fort Myers Dogtrack...............he said he beat the 5-10 NL game for almost 3,000 in a span of less then 10 hours spread out over two sessions.

Something I learned from reading poker articles is something called like "hourly hand rent"...basically the hourly rate you have to figure as a cost of sitting at a raked table with jackpot..

assume 30 hands per hour....average 8 handed..
most places with jackpot have button rake as well..in case sb folds to bb and no other callers..the room makes a buck and the BBJ gets fed.
anyways..
if you sit with $100 buy in and wait for BB...in one hour without winning a hand you are -$24 ...therefore if you are a nit...and wait for a monster to finally play..unless you rake more than $20 you will soon be reloading.

It is profitable. Got to learn and adjust to the tables, like small flushes with suited connectors will lead you into trouble, as players like to play suited aces, kings, queens like no ones business. There are other nuiances that you need to watch for that will increase your profitability in these games, like how hand ranges change. The thing I don't like is how you can not top up to 100$, unless your under 50$, that makes it a pain in the ...

I am going to be in Naples area from late August through the holidays. I take it that the fact that I'm the first post in this thread in 2 years is probably not a good sign. It's an elderly area, so it's possible that it is simply not frequented by many 2+2 ers.

Just curious, since the raise in Florida limits, what is the biggest game I can hope to find spread here consistently? Limit or NL is fine

Any information is appreciated.

They usually have a 2-5 NL game always going everyday and usually have a 5-10 NL game going on the weekends and at night.

I played 5/10/20 here once (only time I had been there in a long time)

I got the impression the game ran a couple times per week but not daily

2/5 has a couple games running everyday all day. 2/5 plo has 1-2 tables all day everyday and 5/10 usually runs everyday also. I play there 6 days a week.
