...by shoving QQ on the second-last hand? I'm talking about this year's LA Poker Classic. I know it was on TV a few weeks ago, still trying to get caught up. For those who didn't see what I'm talking about, Sean Jasayeri was way behind David Doc Sands in chip count. Doc got QQ on the SB and raised. Sean picked up AKo and 3-bet. Doc 4-bet, Sean shoved, Doc called. An ace came on the flop and it held up. Sean won the tournament on the next hand when his A5s beat Doc's shoved KQo.

He second-guessed himself in the post-game interview which surprised me a bit, but is understandable given the disappointment. Mike Sexton seemed to say that HE would consider just calling the 3bet and folding if an A comes on the flop and the other guy bets.

I think QQ is a fist-pump 4bet then shove-call in that situation to get the maximum value - he's ahead of anything but AA and KK and if he wins the hand he wins the tournament! I don't like calling and then hoping for no A on the flop because if he has AK or AQ he's not continuing in that case (so no more value for the hand), and if he was shoving 88-JJ he could hit a set.

Is there really even a debate here?

Do I understand it correctly that this was heads-up? I don't know what exactly the situation, history, dynamic etc. was, but if it was indeed HU it is quite hard to imagine conditions under which getting it in with QQ pre- can be a mistake.

Yes, it was the second-last hand of the tournament (assuming they didn't edit anything out between that hand and the A5s vs. KQo hand) - they were down to 2. Not even a kiss from Erica could bring him a won race.

i guess there i an argument for just calling, but sean jazayeri was not so bad that you could justify not going broke with QQ

I remember watching the live stream and thought Doc made a mistake getting it in with QQ pf vs Sean because Doc was well superior than Sean. Sean was playing so passive pre and post hu and wouldn't make any adjustments. Doc would have won that title by grinding him down.

Probably a small mistake but not a bad play by any means.

The point is that Doc Sands second-guessed himself in a post-tournament interview. Doc himself said he maybe should have just called and then folded QQ if an A ot K came on the flop and Sean bet.

And it wasn't just Doc - Mike Sexton even said that he probably would just call and then get off the hand on a bad flop.

The point of the thread is to express my shock that Mike Sexton would even say such a thing. I can understand Doc saying it because he was disappointed that he lost the tournament - second-guessing oneself is a natural occurence in that situation. But Sexton had no excuse.

So his opponent would never C-bet worse than queens on a A or K high flop?

Pretty sure that David's edge over this fish/amature was massive so he didn't need to be flipping, end of.

If stack sizes were in the 80BBs range his edge can't be that massive. Shoving any 2 blind will win about 20-25% of the time against perfect adjustment.

If the amateur received 20 minutes of coaching about this exact heads up scenario and doesn't give up huge tells you can't pass up a situation like this.

Some tourney players are absolutely atrocious heads up. Doc Sands is one of the best in the world. If his reads were strong and the other guy wasn't very good, a case could def be made for this

I think Doc Sands made absolutely the right play against me, he just got unlucky.

I would have made the same play with 99 through AA, AK, AQ, and possibly suited AJ. Do the math and he would have been a massive favorite against my range.

That was indeed the next to the last play, they did not edit anything out heads up.

Mike Sexton never said he would just call. While doc sands was thinking Mike said Doc may be considering just a call, but the he said I would raise.

I stand corrected. Thanks for posting. Congrats on your win. Can I borrow $1,000?
