Crime surge in AC? Crime surge in AC?

I've got a bunch of comp rooms at various casino hotels for this summer in AC, but my gf, for the first time ever after countless trips with me, is now reluctant and anxious about going back. I don't know how many of you have noticed or read report after report about crimes recently occurring in AC, but it seems like its on the rise. I know that they've laid off at least 20 police officers in AC as well, that can't help matters.

Anyway, for those of you who do go to AC on a regular basis, have you noticed more crime or felt at all less safe than usual?

I was planning on visiting sometime soon now that summer is here and I also have been somewhat skeptical since that murder in late May at Taj. I have been to Taj a few times; never really liked it there and always found it pretty sketchy (one cage in poker room, entrance to poker room only a few feet from main exit). It seems he was targeted in the parking lot when he drove in with a 2010 Lincoln. I drive a luxury car (not as new) but I am very skeptical of going driving to that part of AC.

Borg on the other hand seemed much safer and better run.

Just be careful if you go there and it probably isn't a bad idea to stay with a group of people

Theodore Roosevelt, before becoming President was chief of police in NYC. In order to drum up more more sales, newspapers started printing all the crimes committed in the city, not just a few interesting ones. People believed there was a crime surge, not because there was, but because they saw more of them reported.

Roosevelt's solution was to call the editors in, insist that they stop or else. They decided to reduce the coverage and the "crime surge" subsided.

Leaving the boardwalk at night was never a good idea. You're probably too young to remember, but in the 1980s, it was dangerous to even go to the parking garage at night. I doubt it has gotten much worse. It just was never as safe as you once thought it was. Before your girlfriend was going to AC with you, how much was she really paying attention to crime in AC? My guess is it was not at all.

I was only a few blocks away from the Trop last weekend and was offered cocaine no less than 4 times. AC is sketchy as hell.

Use the valet, it is just as cheap. Not using the valet in AC is insane. Was there this weekend, it was packed, did not ever feel threatened, but I stay in casinos at night.

there was always high crime in AC. I myslef witnessed a guy get mugged right on the boardwalk. I couple skater punks knocked him down with their skateboard and took his money, probably for heroin. It was late at night between the ocean club and trop. The cops came and took his info, but they didn't seem to anxious to find them.

Just last night I was riding the jitneys with over 10K in my pockets. Was I scared? no. Cautious? yes.

As long as people use common sense, such as do not wander away from the casinos at night, and always be aware of your surroundings you will be ok. There are a lot of sketchy people in AC, including in the casino itself. You would think you're safe in self parking, but recent news proved otherwise. However, these things can happen in any city.

This. I've learned that there is crime almost everywhere. Sad, but true. I don't think that AC is any better or worse than other cities in this regard. I've never felt threatened while walking around during the day, or at night near the casinos and on the boardwalk.

Seagulls want any food I have with me, but that's to be expected. Hungry beggars, they is!

Ive been to AC over 20 times in my life and I never once did not feel safe, other then at the TAJ MAHAL. That place is sketchy, but then again ive been there more then half my visits. But now I stay and play at Borgata and that place is all class.

I really think that is an unnecessary risk. Cab it for sure.

It's correct to always be cautious, but if you think going to the fancier, richer place makes you safer, it may not always be the case. i always feel less safe in the obviously rich areas (if they're next to very poor ones). borg may be better run, or just give that appearance, regardless I'd be much more wary of the perp who goes for the bigger, riskier score-- they have more to lose, and they're usually more capable.

a few simple procedures, many of them mentioned on this forum with regards to AC, Cali, etc (and maybe not announcing that you ride the jitney with 10k or more) will drastically reduce the chance for danger.

This about sums it up perfectly. I'm in AC during the day for work and at night for poker at least 2 times a week and have never had a problem. Stay to the casinos and well lit areas at night. If you need to go through a suspect area walk confidently with your head up. Basically don't look like prey and you won't be prey. Its' also possible to go to Harrahs or Borgata and have a great time while staying off Pacific Ave.

Jitney....what's a Jitney?

It's valet at Taj, lot by poker room at Borgata. I always scope out the scene before I power walk to and from my car. I usually wait for some other people walking to their cars as well. Other than that, I don't see the seemy side of AC.

Other than the Borgata, AC is like the floor of a movie theater. They'll be toast for poker if PARX gets their **** together.

that is all

ive lived and played in ac my whole life....it is as safe a city as any city can be....if your going to walk pacific ave with 100's taped to your shirt you will have problems...in the casino i have never had one problem..and ive played at the taj for over 10 years....the i also split some time at borgata although im not happy with some of there floormen in that room...ive seen more arguments and fistfights in that poker room then i ever have at taj..the murder at taj was not a random act...and there was a few years back when there was a shooting at stardust, then a month ago a shooting atMGM grand both out in vegas....use your head and ac can be a great time...enjoy yourself maybe ill catch yo u at the taj

Also as a person who has lived in ACity for over 10 years I reckon there is a bit of unfound hysteria about what's going on in here.

Unfortunately crime happens and the city attracts scumbags that think that they can prey on the vulnerable. But it is no less that LVega$ - a city which I also live in during the year.

You want to get drunk and show off that you have money in your pocket - then you are putting yourself at risk to those who think they can take advantage of your situation.

Just exercise the same caution in AC at night the same way you exercise caution in any city at night you'll be ok. I'm in the uptown district at all kinds of hours for business throughout the week, often by myself. You just have to use common sense, and stay out of areas you don't have any business going to in the first place. And with 3-4 in your crew you're definitely fine anywhere you'd reasonably need to go. Simple things, like don't go to into Arctic Ave Cedar Markets with 14 juveniles hanging out in the front, don't go exploring neighborhoods looking for weed.

There are still loads of cops and they roll pretty deep in tourist areas, stay where people are and things are lit. There aren't really many tricky areas to fool you, if it looks dark and dangerous it probably is. It's not like parts of Philly or DC though. Criminal types here are often bored teenagers as opposed to hardened thugs.

The Taj is kind of a special case, there's just a dark cloud hanging over that place or something.

While you were riding the jitney, did you observe any other riders who you believed might also had $10,000 in their pockets?
Actually, you may be the first ever.
Check with your therapist.
He may have to adjust your meds.

With 10k, were you looking for a $19-a-night room, too?

Are you for real dude?

So I should take all the money out of my bankroll and use it for things I do not need to spend money on, right? Maybe I should have taken a limo from the borgata to the tropicana, so I am sure I get there safe...

No, I didn't have a $19 room. I paid $175.00 (trop poker rate for saturday nights). So why should I blow another 20 bucks on a cab when I can get there just as fast and easy on a jitney for 2.25? How do you know the cab driver isn't insane and looking to rob someone.

I was not waiving my bankroll around so everyone can see it, dude.

I don't see any problem with riding the Jitney with 10k. That is what the Jitney and my pockets were made for.

What do you guys do? Have one casino wire the money to the other?
Pull out your wad to pay a shyster cabby?

Pay no attention to him, it's his schtick to lecture people for not spending enough of their own money on accomodations.

Damn, I haven't been to AC in ten years, but I still remember how much of a shiathole it was/is. I'm not picky, but please allow me more than a ten-foot buffer zone outside of the casino before i have to double-check to make sure I brought a piece with me.

LV has it's issues also, but at least you typically have to get a few blocks away from the strip before you get called a cracker, etc.
