Chad Announcing Grinder's Tax Trouble Chad Announcing Grinder's Tax Trouble

Caught some of the WSOP this past weekend. During some table chat, Grinder mentions that all pros, including him, are horrible at money management.

Chad, then, chimes in about how Grinder has an 350k lien and that some of his property was in foreclosure.

Is it appropriate for an announcer to reveal a player's personal finance details on the air?

It struck me as not cool.

Old news. Norm didn't reveal anything new or unknown

Should the MNF crew talk about Favres sexting to open the broadcast? It is his personal life as well

If you put yourself in the spotlight, you gotta live with that. Nothing different than reports about Toni Braxtons second bankruptcy imo.

Eh, it was major news in Florida newspapers; everything is fair game once it is out in print mainstream media. Plus it sets up a feel-good comeback story for Grinder as he heads into the FT for ESPN.

What wouldn't be cool is if he reported on stakes from players and what percentage ppl have on the rail (a la Flack for Scotty during HORSE in 08) as that info might attract IRS attention. Although I wish they did sometimes b/c I feel that isn't reported enough when ppl think these pros are playing "for thousands of their own money" when in reality they are selling pieces left and right; it give s a bad impression to young players/degens who tap out their savings to play with the big boys with their own money vs ppl who obv arn't (which I think gives them an edge).

Your intentions are good though and I am sure Grinder doesn't mind now considering he's made it back!

It's a fair point, but, I would say the difference is that Favre is a household name and the story was posted in every major news venue in the country. So, even the casual fan knew about it. It would've been hard for the announcers to NOT mention the story.

As a casual poker fan, I didn't know about Grinder's trouble until Chad brought it up.

It's definitely poker news. The tax and foreclosure troubles of celebrities are fair game. Willie Nelson, Wesley Snipes, Nic Cage, etc., all had similiar problems, and it was therefore news. If you don't want your personal finances to be on the news-don't become famous, which means don't play poker at venues that are televised.

Here's an article talking about how he gave an interview to a local Florida CBS TV station about the situation:

Don't really think this would have offended Grinder given that he won $1.5 million at the 50k Players Championship at the WSOP this year and a Final Table appearance to come at the ME + over $9 million in tournament earnings to date. I think he's doing just fine. If he was busto and Chad started telling a degen story he heard about Grinder, it would be different!

At the 50k players championship Michael c-bet a hand and Norman said "The only thing that has cost people more money than c-betting is income tax." And I was like, low-blow man, not cool.

I'll tell Norman that Folding Soup doesn't approve.

If it's out in the media already, I have no problem with it, although I'd be loathe to talk about someone's financial difficulties - although it might affect the way he plays which would be relevant.

As for Favre, completely different circumstance. Favre is under investigation for sexual harassment and if found guilty, could be suspended for a game. This is a cloud that hangs over the entire Vikings team and therefore couldn't be ignored.

I don't think it's foul that Chad brought it up. After all, Grinder seems to have been pretty candid about it in interviews and stuff. It would've only been a big deal if he had kept it hush-hush and/or asked ESPN not to say anything.

You often hear in the forums, posters being critical of the announcers if they sweep a story under the table. There was a lot of talk for example, if ESPN was going to bring up Chino's possible outstanding arrest warrent before or during his Nov. 9 appearance.

I think Grinder's handled the press aspect of his tax issues (which I believe were property taxes, not income taxes) quite well. He's owned up to mistakes and said he's talking care of. Then to make sure he could take care of it, he walked into the Rio and kicked ass!

I might agree with OP if Grinder never addressed it.
