I have a friend moving to California and he wants to become a card dealer. Can anybody help me point him in the right direction?

In California, licenses are granted on a county-by-county basis. Every cardroom has its own preference regarding prior experience and training schools. I give this advice every time it comes up, and those asking almost always argue with me about it, but I live and work in California and I really really really know about what I'm talking here:

The best way to find out the prerequisites for a job is to call up and ask.

Tell your friend to look up the rooms in the area to which he's moving and contact them. They all likely have different requirements. Licensing won't be done until he's hired, and will be room-specific.

Other than that, he better be prepared to work weekends and graveyard shift.

The are requirements as far as no criminal background. Some of the bottom section dealers are a little rough, but Commerce and the Bike both have some really good dealers in the top section.
