Hey,

Can anyone recommend a decent quality safe to store money? I want the best quality/price ratio.

Thanks

You might get a better response if you posted this somewhere else instead of LCP.

You might also want to define your needs more clearly, as in, how much money, how much internal volume you need, where the safe will be located, whether you need it to be portable or not, exactly how much you are prepared to spend and so on.

I would suggest posting on a site that specialises in security solutions might be a better approach.

As it stands your question is vague enough to be completely useless, no-one can tell you whether some kind of cheapass generic hotel room safe meets your needs or whether you need a titanium-lined bank vault and a bunch of armed guards on rotating shifts.

It depends on who you are trying to keep out. If you're just trying to keep your dope fiend roommates out of your money, you can get a halfway decent one for your 4 figure stash, like a Honeywell, for a few hundred bucks at Home Depot or Lowes.

If you're trying to keep moderately skilled thieves that are specifically coming after your 5/10 roll after they followed you home from the casino, you're going to need a multi-thousand dollar safe that's bolted to the floor, preferably concrete. Cheapest way to get such a safe is craigslist. Jewelry stores, etc sell their old safes that they've outgrown, or whatever, for under a grand sometimes. Be ready to deal with 800 pounds or more, both moving it and having a floor that will support it.

Money: less than 10k.
Security: Need to stop casual house burglers.
Cost: Low end without being total trash.

less than 10k is pocket change

just put it in a secret hiding spot. If you were a burglar, what is the last place you would look for money? (I would tell you but then my house would be a prime target)

If you live alone I'd suggest keeping less than 10K in a crumpled fast food joint bag in the kitchen trash can. Hiding in plain sight.

Don't do this if you ever do chores drunk. I mean, the adrenalin dump is probably a good way to shake off a hangover when you jump out of bed to try and beat the garbage truck, but it's not worth $10K.

Let's say you're casually robbing a house and you come across a $5,000 safe.

Do you just give up?

Or do you assume there's more than $5,000 worth of stuff in there, and come back another time, maybe with a bulldozer to just rip the thing out of the concrete,

That's not really a "safe" because it's not fire-resistant or anything. You can accomplish the same thing, which is basically just a hiding place, for free by just looking around your place. Like hiding it inside a stereo speaker, etc.

Buy a safe, but then keep the cash in the crumpled up fast food bag. It will drive the burglars crazy.

Banks have really nice safes. In fact their safes are so nice and they like them so much, they will pay you to hide your money there.

The key is to diversify. Split it up and hide it in well-worn copies of old poker books.

If you were to hide money in a book (which I'd recommend against in any case but whatever), make it a book that would be of interest to absolutely nobody - and old dictionary, or college textbook - rather than something a party guest might pick up and think, oh cool.

Also don't hide money where robbers look for other stuff, like by your bedside (looking for guns), in the freezer or in the toilet tank (looking for drugs), etc.

Get a giant strap-on dildo. (Use--optional step.) Put money in dildo. Leave good coating of KY on dildo. Leave in drawer next to bed.

No thief will touch it.

You're welcome.

The following is a wall safe, which assumes you own your home or live in a rental but don't mind having to patch up the rectangular hole in the wall when you move:

Although the safe could probably be removed from the surrounding wall with a sawzall by a prepared burglar in about 15 minutes, it should work fine at keeping your money out of the hands of guests or random, pill-head burglars.

A strategically placed smear of Nutella is a variation of this option.

I wouldn't trust a bank with one dollar.
