big o should be a tighter game than plo8.... It is harder to get 5 cards to play well with eachother than 4. That is if u dont want to play with a dangler.

So far the best line of 2016 comes from the guy facing 4 bets cold preflop on the button.

"I'll go ahead and put in the 5th bet, but I'm going to need a second card."

At a 9 handed 1/2 NLH table, the players in seats 1-6 are inebriated, jovial, and boisterous. The player in seat 9 is tanking about putting his last $20 into a $100 heads-up pot. (He had two black fives in the hole, and with 4 clubs on board, he now has a flush.) I am called over because another player has called for the clock on seat 9.

At this point, the hand has taken so long that seats 1-6 are involved in 3 separate conversations, none of which has to do with poker, and they are all attempting to talk louder than their neighbors. It is a festive atmosphere.

As I give the "clock speech" to seat 9, the rambunctious 6 person cacophony continues. Seat 9 doesn't seem affected, and in fact, begins a conversation with his opponent in seat 7 about the hand in play. The player in seat 8 says, "Wow, is this table loud! I feel like I am at a New Year's Eve party!"

As the player in seat 9 fails to make a decision in the allotted time, I begin the verbal countdown from 10 seconds.

Seat 8 says, "Hey, we even get a countdown! This IS just like New Year's Eve!!"

At this point, the entire table then stops their current chatter and proceeds to count down loudly along with me, reaching a crescendo as we get to 3, 2, 1, and hollering "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"

This may have been the only time that it has ever been worth it for someone to use up the entire clock.

From Deadwood. Dan, the henchman of the local crime boss, has been sent out to summon a few people...and he is having a bad day, and his temper is getting the better of him:

Dan: Al wants to see you at the Gem.
Sol: (Nods) When I can.
Dan: No, he didn't say nuthin' about that.
Sol: I'm saying.
Dan: You're saying what?
Sol: (Slowly, loudly) When I can.
Dan: Are you gettin' ****in' smart with me? Cause I'll lift you up in the air and carry you before the whole goddamn camp like a ****in' turtle with its legs wigglin'. (Sol glares over at Doc's cabin, sees no sign of activity, turns back, glaring at Dan and walks to the Gem. Dan follows him, spotting someone up ahead.) Oh, Hey! Hey! (To Sol) You go on and wait. Hey! Hey, Adams. Where's Hawkeye?
Silas: I don't know. What'd he do?
Dan: Al's lookin' for him.
Silas: For what?
Dan: You're about to take a goddamn beatin' for every ****in' time I've been asked 'What for?' already today.

***

I was thinking of that scene when I told a coworker, "The next player who coughs in my face is gonna take a beating for every time I've been coughed on this week."

(I just missed a week with the flu, so I'm a little sensitive about this right now.)

YTF: Time! The action is here!

PLAYER WHO FOLDED OUT OF TURN: (annoyed that I don't see what is obvious to him) When he counts out his chips like that, I know he's gonna put in a raise.

YTF: But what if he was raising to get YOU out? If you fold early, he can change his mind, right? Now do you see why folding in turn is important?

PWFOOT: (scoffs) He hasn't done that once! I've been playing with him now for an hour and a half!

YTF: That's some sample size you got there.

PWFOOT: (scoffs arrogantly again)

YTF: (shrugs) Hey, I've seen it happen...and I've been dealing for a lot longer than an hour and a half!

This week's highlight is the chip leader who proclaimed loudly that he's not going to chop while walking to the final table putting chips into his pockets and getting disqualified.

Well. He was right.

I am guessing the floor staff was hoping for a chop, so they weren't there with racks to help him. While being slightly humorous, what is the floor staff doing that they can't make sure players get to the final table?

I'll go with 'working out cunning and elaborate plans on how they can screw their customers, and end the tournament early so that they can all skip to the parking lot and go home early'

I don;t know the specifics of this casino, but I have been in plenty of places where the floorstaff is busy because they are understaffed and the way players go to the final table is that a dealer says Hey everybody go to table 6 and draw a seat there ....

And yes ideally the floor would come over with racks and give proper instructions and walk with the players .... but since the floorman is the cashier, chip runner, list attendant and guy who has to track down the cocktail waitress and tournament director .... some of those tasks are going to get short shrift.

The room I play in has this issue. Not a complaint, just how it is. Corporate wants to save money.

Big tourney in town. My first hand in the box, blinds are 200-400. Fold to MP, who tosses in a 1000 chip.

YTF: Call.

MP: (ignoring me, like all players do) 1000.

YTF: No sir, that's a call.

(MP looks confused, so I explain why. He accepts it...but no one else does.)

OTHERS: but he announced 1000! He said raise!...

(I explain rule to them)

NIT: (this guy is not above making up stuff to appear right) but the chip hit the table at the same time!

YTF: no, and it wasn't even close. But even if it it did, THAT is a call, too.

(They all conceded. But you could tell, it bothered them.)

(THE VERY NEXT HAND, a big multi way pot breaks out. 1000 preflop, 2000 flop, there's at least 10k out there when I put out the turn card)

SB: Six. (Picks up a 5k chip and a 1k chip off his stack)

YTF: six hundred.

SB: (freezes; tenses up to argue; almost instantly relaxes when he realizes there's nothing to discuss. Puts out 600.)

OTHERS: (it's déjà vu. They all concede that I'm correct, but it clearly bothers them.)

(The 600 got raised to 6k and got called. After the hand, I pushed the huge pot to the winner. He folded the next hand, and spent most of that time stacking chips. When he was done, I noticed his biggest denomination was his shortest stack, and it was behind the others. He knows the rule, he didn't do it on purpose, he just needs it brought to his attention.)

YTF: Blinds and antes, please! Joe, could you move those bigger chips out to the front of the pile, please?

JOE: (body tenses to argue, instantly relaxes when he realizes there's nothing to discuss...he complies, yet you can tell that it bothers him for some reason.

WTF? I've dealt three hands. I've had to step in three times to correct guys who should know better. And they're all mad at ME? I know what you're thinking, maybe my tone was out of line or something, but trust me, that wasn't it. I just got back from vacation, I'm refreshed and recharged, I'm in a great mood.

I guess I forgot what poker players are like after not dealing with them for a week.

The "six" being assumed to be "600" before anyone has acted on it seems a bit harsh, I figured you could ask for clarification. Is that a standard rule everywhere?

TDA actually changed that in the July 2015 ruleset so that TD has discretion to rule it as a 6k bet.

Player A declares “Bet, five”, then tosses out a 5000 chip. While both 500 and 5000 are
technically viable bets here, 5000 is much more in keeping with recent betting action
(which is in increments of 1000) and pot size which at 11,200 is more than double the
maximum amount of A’s bet. This said, the TD may determine it is in the best interest of
the game to enforce betting discipline and rule the bet is 500.
ETA: In YTF's case, I would allow the bet to be 6000 because of pot size.

TDA rule .... though the terms of the rule leave some leeway for reasonable determination of intent ... so depending on the exact circumstances it could go either way ...

Say for example the player tosses the chips here and says Six. In this case I am going to call it 6k not 600. If the dealer actually has to ask for clarification I think that should be lesser amount. Its the times where clarification isn;t needed to know that the higher amount was intended that get leeway.
