I'm pretty sure HSP wouldn't be as popular as it is today, if it weren't distributed in torrents and in YouTube by GSN. Practically everyone is talking about the latest HSP on the forums the day after it's aired, much thanks to torrents, because I believe ~70% of the show's viewers reside outside U.S.
The alternative way is to share the show for free (or atleast not bitch about if it's being torrented) and it will gather huge crowds all over the world. This has been the case with many programs.
When a series/program reaches a cult status, it will attract more companies willing to pay higher amounts advertisement time or whatever.
It's just simple math. A show with 10M non-paying viewers is valuable than 1M audience who just watch it when it airs on TV.
PS. Shows great capability of argumentation by starting out with an ad hominem -style "hey idiot"-comment.
PPS. It is impossible for a show to do good if no one watches it. I live in Europe. There's no way for me to watch it, EVEN LEGALLY, right now.
A lot of poker players watch the show and I think poker players have a higher purchasing power for stuff like this than your average consumer. They are also used to online transactions so they won't hesitate to buy the show off the Internet. Some players might even get g4 just for this show.
That is why I think that it is a bad idea to distribute this show in particular for free, simply because a lot of poker players are willing to pay. Just look at the replies about buying it from iTunes in this thread, surely there were not as many in the previous episode threads.
If I was the head of some network och tv-channel I would think that example 1 million paying viewers would be
waaaay more impressive/valuable than 10-15 million free viewers.
GSN is a way bigger network than g4 so the comparison is flawed because of GSNs availability is higher than g4.
I feel uncofortable debating this since I hardly know anything about the television business and none of us can prove anything cause we don't have any numbers.
It's too bad they don't distribute it to Europe.
