I think one of my main problems when I sit down to play cash games is that I sometimes think that people should always respect me instantly. I'm sometimes shocked when people reraise me, and then I'll reraise with substandard hands as a sort of "Don't you know who I am?" type of thing to only get busted by pocket Aces. The fact of the matter is when I raise, I find it embarassing if I get reraised and then have to fold, especially if I'm trying to steal the blinds or something and one of them reraises me. Sometimes I think poker movies screw with my head, like I'll watch Rounders, and go play and I immediately think that people should recognize me as Mike Mcdermott and just lay down and let me run over them. Is there anyway to help take my ego (my apologies to Dr. Schoonmaker because I remember in his book he said that this is not really ego, but id I think, but oh well) out of this?
True ego remains detached from the hand. BS ego is way over-invested. Both types of ego exist in all humans. Your ratio is out of balance.
By the way, this is the very reason some people feel the need to continually proclaim themselves the best player, instead of just shutting up and living.
Put someone on a range, and then act appropriately.
If you raise, and they rr, what do you think they have?
Prolly an overpair, so call if you have some$ behind and have a pair for set value, else prolly fold
The only reason people wont bow before you is because they are too busy taking your money to realise that you are a 'better and more worthy opponent' that you think you are
Rather than getting bust against AA, which of course doesnt help you gain much respect, after a reraise just act a little. Even if you have crap just slow down and make it look like youre making a tough lay down even if it is an easy one. This is going to make people know that you are at least capable of thinking things through and can let big hands go (even if you cant)
I used to have this problem. I would shove over rr just because I wanted to show them who the boss was. The way I got past it was to watch some CR videos of good players. After watching the videos I was able to say "well, if so and so can fold to a 3-bet in this place, then I definitely can too."
It was nice to see somebody take a bad beat and listen to them just shrug it off. When I get into those situations I try and emulate this behavior.
