Hello there,

I would like to get some advice from you out here.
I've been playing online poker now for about 2 years. I started with No Limit and then switched to Limit. Both with fairly good success, moving up in Stakes over time, cashing out way to often and because of that never really moving to the middle stakes. Then about 3 month ago I tried HU NL and made quite some good money, but I found it to "exhausting" and to swingy to play. And because of playing HU I found 6max extremly slow and boring. Before that I was really playing a TAGish style, but since then I changed "gears" turning into a 30/22 LAG. Sometimes I run over the tables, sometimes I obviously don't.
Well, I got really bored with Holdem, so I thought I should be playing something different. I ordered Jeff Hwangs PLO book and also Ray Zee's Stud book. I tried both games now for a while, but not really with great success. I guess I should put a lot of effort into one game and not 2 or 3 at the same time.
Well, the problem is, I can not motivate myself to do this. After a short while, especially after having been sucked out 2 or 3 times, I just move on to another game (from PLO to Stud8 eg.). Obviosuly this doensn't really help!
anyhow, my main problem at the moment is: I lost one of the keyskills: PATIENCE!!!! And I can't stand losing, although I'm absolutely aware that I should be happy to see my opponents make terrible mistakes. This should give me confidence in my game. But I just feel like whenever I get sucked out it's a really big pot and I suck out on them in small ones. Theres no logic in betting a 1 outer or whatsoever to me. Well, I feel like either I give up Poker all the way or I have to change/start from the beginning so to say.
Do you have any good advice?
I would really appreciate that!
All the best,
Aquilaman

There are many, many skills which one must master to make money playing poker. If you've lost your ability to play with patience and discipline you are in for a humbling poker future.

Since you've had "fairly good success" for 2 years, you know that you have the ability to play well. If you can't find the discipline to maintain correct play, then you can't continue to expect to play winning poker.

Mixing games makes sense if it helps prevent you from drifting away from correct play due to boredom or indifference but it certainly won't insulate you from suck outs. Stud/8 and PLO are both absolutely heartbreaking when it comes to the suck out factor.

It seems that you're saying that you know how to play well, often play well, but occasionally play poorly despite the recognition that you're playing poorly.

That's effectively tilt.

John Feeney, Alan Schoonmaker and Tommy Angelo all address handling tilt and/or the psychological aspects of the game. If you've not yet read their works, that may be a fine starting point.
