Cant figure out my equity vs an opponents "range" Cant figure out my equity vs an opponents "range"

posted this in beginners questions, but thought maybe i could get some insight here.

I mentally shutdown when I am forced to do a realtime calculation which involves multiple hands.

For my sake Approxamite equity is fine. But apolpgize that I really am not a "math" guy and all of my equations are just how I imagine them.

I know that w AdAs on a 5c6cJd
I have:

66% equity vs 7s8s
66% equity vs 3s4s
25% equity vs 5s6s
10% equity vs 5d5s
10% equty vs 6s6d
10% equity vs JsJh
60% equity vs 9cTc

So I think i would add up my equity: 247
divide it by specific different hands, in this case:7
and find that my equity vs those hands is: 35%

Individually easy to do, but together very hard for me.
Whats even more difficult for me to do is a calculation vs a range of hands that is weighted individually.

While i understand how to do that math (i think):

66% equity vs A which he has 10% of the time
50% equity vs B which he has 25% of the time
25% equity vs C which he has 65% of the time

.1(.66) + .25(.50) + .65(.25) = 35% equity

I dont understand the actual hand distribution frequencies.

If his hand range is:
Set of 5s
club flush draw
Open ended straight draws

on a board of 5c6cJd
what is the actual frequency each phenomenom occurs? And are there any frequency "rules" i can remember when it comes to hand distributions?

IE: 5 to 1 more likely to have suited cards than a pair....

or any others you think are valueable, or am i making this harder than it should be?

It's based on the number of combinations of each hand.

Let's say he can only have 55 or 7s8s

There are 3 combinations of 55 (5d5s, 5h5s, 5d5h) and only 1 combination of 7s8s. So he'll have 55 75% of the time and 7s8s 25% of the time.

Is this what you were asking?

I guess im just wondering what methods others use that they are happy with, in determining you equity vs an opponents range. Its fairly simple math, but it is just too hard for me to do it in 10 seconds at the table. I could certainly figure it out in 5 minutes on a notepad, but what process is everyone using?

twodimes.net

You could also download pokerstove.

There isn't time to plug while you're making a decision. If you play around with these you'll get better feel for your equity. You'll still be using an estimate, but it will improve your estimating skills.

pokerstove it lol. the only thing to be careful with is that a player might not play all combinations of 78s for example the same way. he might float half the time and raise the flop the other time. in this case pokerstove would overweight his range to 78s when really it's more heavily weighted to the hands that beat you (albeit only very slightly). ps ur range there is very tight. the fact ur AA comes out behind against his range should give you a reasonableness check. AA is just about ahead of anybody's range there...e.g. you're missing out all flush draws
