I would argue that if you were young, did not have a family, and were committed to grinding a lot of hours, you could make a decent living playing 1/2. It is not too hard to make $200 in 7 hours. (Again, speaking only from my own live experiences. I'm not sure if competition differs in different regions, countries). But that seems to be a separate argument.
The twitch streams (or at least Jason Somerville's, the only one I really watch on a regular basis) is attracting new people to poker. Granted, these new players may come in with more information/skills than the new players did during the poker boom...but they are still "new players", and I would assume they are worse than people who have been playing for >1 year.
I think the popularization of poker twitch stream will have close to ZERO effect (positive or negative) on the bigger online & live games (and, presumably, the people who are playing poker as their main source of income). However, these twitch streams are getting new players to sign up for online accounts (and play in live small buyin tournaments and 1-2), which I believe will be good for the poker community as a whole.
Note: I'm not quite sure how you read my previous post, and somehow assumed that I said that you could make a living playing 1-2 live NL. I wasn't trying to say that at all. Personally, I think a younger person with no family, living in an apartment with little expenses could do okay. Obviously not a great long term plan though. But for 1-2 years, i would think it's do-able.
Edit: and to answer your question "How long until you are better off working at a grocery store?"...some people might get more enjoyment out of playing poker than standing at the checkout line. And if the yearly income is close, many people would be much happier doing poker than groceries.
