I liked the Mason podcast but was surprised by his flimsy logic when he claimed that diet and exercise have a negligible or nonexistant effect on poker success. His counter-examples (Stu Ungar, etc.) only show that the correlation between diet/exercise and poker winrate is not 1 (Could stu have been better if he was less of a degenerate?). They obviously do not show that there isn't a causal relationship. To figure that out we would want to look at properly conducted empirical research and not a few one-sided anecdotes.
There is a large literature on the effect these things have on mental acuity in certain areas so it would be pretty surprising if they didn't also affect one's ability to make complex poker decisions. Even if someone was playing blackjack and had memorized basic strategy, poor diet/exercise would probably raise the chances of a mistake. And poker, in comparison, is far more complex with fewer rote decisions.

Maybe the answer falls somewhere in the middle between diet doesn't matter at all and diet really matters but ultimately might matter a bit less than some of us might think.

Have got almost through Lex ep. A couple of q's:
i) Can somebody (even Joe) elaborate on what Joe was saying about no more datamining in zoom games. Does that mean HUD's dont work?
ii) I'm not there but after discussing SNE was wondering for an average (ie. not a nit) player playing a million hands at 500NL zoom, is that likely to get you elite? Or is it nowhere near?
We need Will Jaffe on soon. We've had Lex talking about Antonio (again), we need Dank's opinion on Lex (again)

Playing 1mm hands of 500nl ZOOM should get you pretty close to elite if the vpp/hand is near 1. I am not sure what the VPP rate is these days.
Dank and Lex i believe are friendly now

Those who haven't seen today's podcast with Gorgeous_Gamer, here's a heads up: it starts off painfully slow...and then Joe Ingram grabs the podcast bull by the horns and turns it into one of the most entertaining anything I've enjoyed in quite some time.
Bravo, papi! Bravo!

I'm not sure how Mason can believe that diet doesn't matter for poker. I know if I eat better vs say pizza I feel better and play a little better. Maybe he'll show up in the thread and opine. My guess is that most of the poker decisions are so simple for him that diet never mattered?

I reached out to Max recently after meeting him in Vegas. We've had King Dan on before but might be time for an update with him. The other 2 i don't know much about but put then on the master list.

+1 for another Jungle podcast. In addition to always being an entertaining guest, there is plenty of timely issues to discuss, such as the "Manila Shuffle", gto dream machines, his new, frequent posting about all kinds of high stakes cheating(isildur?,bots, etc) the possible commencement of Durrrr challenge in the next few months, coaching now etc etc.

Schedule for the next 2 weeks
Today 3pm EST with Sarah Grant/Herring from Poker News! Sarah is an endboss for interviews on Poker News and also does a podcast/stream sometimes that is really funny. My friends have told me she likes to ask fun questions that are similar to the fun ones I ask.
Weds 4pm EST with Max Steinberg. Max is at the WSOP final table this year and also very active in the DFS community.
Friday 4pm est with old school SSFR legend TYromper aka my friend Tyler Todt. I've known Tyler for about 7 years now in some capacity. He used to be the biggest 1/2 winner back in the PTR days on Pokerstars. After Black Friday he got divorced and started working as a personal trainer who enjoyed playing chess here in Chicago. Then he met someone who he started taking trips to Africa with for different missions that he ended up marrying. He still plays poker on the American sites with a graph that goes straight up. I think he is one of those life end boss types of people that I know. You guys will enjoy him.
Next Monday 3pm EST with Jessica Dawley
Weds/Fri with Timex aka Mike McDonald (not sure on exact day yet)
Next spot in that week will be Elky for now schedule depending

I especially enjoyed the recent crownupguy show, loads of good stuff in there.
I know it's been said here before but Would be great you can somehow get Luke Schwartz on.

It really did start off painfully slow but eventually I was able to spice things up a bit. I think the new twitch poker player starting up is fascinating in how easy they think poker will be. I mean they don't think it will be easy but I've talked to a bunch of them who have been playing for a few months who are like I will become one of the best. I ask how many hours are you putting in? The answer is never that many/day outside of 1-2 tabling on stream. Twitch is really growing some delusional poker players out there. I can't imagine how many of these start playing for real money but honestly it has to be so many.
Totttallly agree. Maybe this could be good for poke-her? At least in the short term. But what happens when they learn a very hard lesson the hard way...and on stream? It's hard to rebound after making all sorts of declarations i.e. "I'm going to p4wn the poker world....because I want to."
Nothing wrong with having the desire to become the greatest/best at something. And I think "proving everyone wrong" can be a healthy motivator given the right circumstances. But outright declaring it, then following it up with absurd reasoning? Kind of makes me cringe.
Just look at StickyRice1. Had an epic run. Then once he reached ~$40k, he declared to his friend "imagine if I got to $100k in a month?" Next thing you know, its safe to assume he's bust, and all of the sudden he's nowhere to be found (as far as streaming poker) and he declares "I just play for fun...I play counter strike. That's my shiiieett." <--I call bull****.

Would be awesome if you could get Seiver on. Also looking forward to Timex again.

His point seemed to go like this. The personality type to be good at poker is a bit obsessive. Right now, many of those people have added diet/exercise to their mix, and since they're good at optimizing, they're now buff diet freaks. While it isn't actually helping their poker that much (other than feeling like they're in control), you have a lot of examples of healthy people crushing poker. Given a huge chunk of confirmation bias, his side is hard to disprove.
So much this. After a cold snap, who doesn't head out for soup?

joey, what are the chances to get max altergott or ole schemion on your podcast at some point in the future?
actually i'm not even sure if max is a proper guest for having in front of a longer interview but ole should be pretty outgoing i believe.
ravenswood13 or phil ivey would be great as well obv but ivey probably doesn't even care about making these webcam sessions right?
edit: ok i just caught up with this thread a little bit. looks like max is a good possibility

Gilbert Arenas please.
Figured I'd throw out a highly improbable name to fit the theme of the thread. It would be pretty entertaining hearing about him playing Stars during NBA games at half time. He was at PCA last year i think so he definitely still plays, maybe not that unattainable?
Shout out to Agent Zero.

Just watched the Lex podcast and was disappointed to hear you mention going to see a chiropractor. They're generally snake oil salesmen who at best are message therapists trying to trick you into thinking they have a medical background and at worse can cause serious harm to you. Interesting stuff. The guy I see is a younger guy who I know from playing ball with who really helped me out with some back pain I had before, my posture, my breathing technique and overall technique for stretching/workouts. Have much less back/shoulder pain and improved cardio/condition at this point from things I've gotten from him.
Would be GTO

I would say medium to low possibilty at this point, have heard no reply back yet. Ole is another GTO guest option. I sent him a message.

For people who play with mostly great players, what you're saying could be right. It sure sounds good.
Also Joey did a nice job. It is probably harder than we think to have an entertaining interview with a guest who doesn't spend a lot of time on camera.

I actually think having someone like Mason on is really easy to make entertaining. You let him do most of the talking and sit back to enjoy/follow up some points. I think it comes off in a fascinating/entertaining type of way. Whereas you take someone like Stickyrice that I would say was still fairly easy to do but was more challenging than someone like Mason. Challenging in the sense that I wanted to make it entertaining for the audience watching but not be too trolly or trainwrecky. If me/sticky were having that conversation offline it would have been much "better" different. Sticky was more entertaining but in a much different type of way.
I've also talked to Mason a couple times in person so I wasn't completely noob going in

I know what you mean about that first part but you are a bit more aware of what the poker world is like and what it takes to make it. Someone who has had some success outside of poker potentially might come in and see all these people popular streaming on twitch and think I can do that too. They might think Jimmy Stapler is one of the best in the world at poker and think they can get to that point.
