I have my garage again! ...at least for a little while. Unfortunately, we have little time before the WSOP, but people still want to do some sort of league. Previous years were $100 for each league game, raising enough for multiple seats.

Here's what I'm thinking for this year. I'd love some feedback on it.

$40 Tuesday tourneys, every week for four weeks. ($40-100 cash games are Thursdays.) Two tables, 4500 stacks, 7pm to midnight. Half the prize pool reserved for the league. Aiming for one $1500 seat.

At the end, we hold a weekend freeroll BBQ, from noon to 9pm. Starting stacks are based on a combination of attendance and performance. 1125 for each game played. 3000 per 1st place finish, 1500 per 2nd, 1000 per 3rd, and 500 per 4th through 6th. These numbers may need tweaking.

Winner gets the seat, winnings split 50/50 between player/league (and distributed based on attendance). Extra cash goes to the winner for travel expenses.

Hopefully this will create enough excitement that we can have one or two $100 one-offs the week after.

Thoughts? I have my reasons for a lot of this, but I'm curious how it reads on its own.

I guess it's just so awesome that everybody is left speechless...

As I think about it, it might be fun to have $100 one-offs for other events... partly because I can only attend WSOP for the first week this year (Phish tour is priority!)... getting 25 people for a $100 2-7TD may take some work, but I can probably get 15 for O8.

Gotta get people out of this NLHE rut!

I really like how you arrange it. Sounds good to me

Assuming you fill two tables, what are the payouts on the $40 weekly tournaments, if you reserve half for the league? How long are your blinds? I don't see a 4,500 stack on your cheat sheet

The freeroll sounds like a blast. I love that people earn their stacks by playing and playing well (or maybe getting lucky).

For a long-term more expensive league, I'm not a big fan of awarding all prizes on the results of one game, no matter how many chpis you get. But for a shorter thing like this, I think it'll be fun.

For 2 tables, let's assume 20 players, so that's $400 in prizes. Since we're playing more for points than money, I like to give back to 20-30% of the field. This is just off the top of my head, but something like $140, $100, $70, $50, $40.

How did you come up with 1125 for each game played? That is an odd number.

I like to mirror the structure of the event for which we're playing. $1500 WSOP events start with T4500. 4500 divided by 4 is...

Our group would get a kick out of something like this. But with a smaller, one-table game, we couldn't raise enough in time for this year. How would you award the prize if you were doing a year-long league? By best league results throughout the year? How do you reconcile doing something like this and not highlighting who the weaker players are?

I'm on my phone so i can't do it, but browse the threads I've started for the "tips for a wsop league" thread. LOTS of info.

But you're right, the weaker players see they're weak. That's the downside. We've lost seveal because of it, and as a whole our group has gotten a lot better at poker.

The upside is that we've sent ten people to the WSOP, with two deep cashes. The league was insanely popular, three tables every time.

Got it. Thanks. Tips for a successful WSOP Big Prize League

I think we'll have to seriously weigh the pros and cons of this. We have some players who are overall money losers, but every now and again hit a big night, which is the beauty of poker. But this might be too discouraging for them. I'm sure it would be a big hit with most, though.

Agreed you could do it on a reverse points system highest average points using 5 games or less if played less but for 1 game you only get 2/3 of the points credited (encourages people to play at least a few times)

rather than being all based on one final game at the end...

anyway...still sounds sweet.

Yup. And that band happens to "do it" for me. Last summer on the road, I deepened existing friendships and started many new ones... I made no plans, but hitchhiked and couch surfed for a month. I visited places I've never been, re-visited sites full of nostalgia for my youth, and learned a lot about myself along the way.

The positive energy inside a crowd of thousands experiencing pure bliss cannot be described, and you don't need drugs to feel it. We all have our passions, no? It surprises anybody that I might get hard-core into something?

Nicely qualified. "I" don't need them, but what about you?

Guess I'm not done with the troll thing yet.

WSOP before hippie tour this year. Was a disaster the other way around last year.

Whee, bump!

I plan to start this league next week. We've had two solid non-league tourneys since coming back, with the third tonight. Not quite as much interest as I had hoped, but it's a sign of my previous success that I get bummed by "only" 18 players twice a week.

Here's my current plan:

Freeroll chips based on participation: 1k for one game, 3k for two, 6k for three, 10k for all four (each game is worth 1k more than the previous).

Freeroll chips based on performance: 4k for 1st, 2k for 2nd, 1k for 3rd, 500 for 4th & 5th.

Then the weekend game is HUGE! Lots o' fun.
