Who has to count down stacks in self dealt home stuff? I know Doyle Brunson refused to count his stack down for anyone ever up until recently for a loose cannon, so I'm guessing it's the dealer's job? However in self dealt games some dealers are crap at it so does the general rule state the person wanting the count needs to do it?

As long as chips are neatly stacked and big chips are visible, nobody does. One of the skills of the game is learning how to read a stack.

This is never an issue in our game because half of us can glance at a stack and get within 1-2 chips of an accurate count. Give us a few seconds, and it's exact.

Also, most of us have no problem counting down when asked. But you can't force someone to, and nobody else should volunteer that information.

...now, if it's a bet, then anybody can, but it's best if the player or dealer does it. When I'm dealing I'm ready with an answer before it's asked.

I shoved all in someone wanted to know how much. I don't believe I'm obliged to do so...?

Yes, you are.

People have a right to know the amount of the bet.

If you don't want to count it out, let someone else do it.

These are home games. There are no hard-and-fast rules.

In a casino, the dealer will count out your bet if you don't want to. Absent a permanent dealer, figure out what works for you. Regardless, players have a right to know the amount being wagered.

Are you going to let your opponent count down your stack?

For cripes sake, why does everyone have to resist everything that makes a game go easier? Just count down the damn stack already. If you cannot do it, a) you're a moron and I can't figure out why you would be risking money on poker, and b) the dealer should be able to quickly and easily do it anyway. Even in a home game, there's got to be SOMEBODY who can at least pretend to be able to COUNT. Hopefully. Tho these days I do wonder.

Poker is really irritating. People are more than willing to play all the time, but don't figure they should cooperate at all, or even bother to learn the most basic rules, etiquette and procedures. I just hope these people don't decide to become military snipers or cops, because someone would have to tell them WHICH END OF THE GUN TO AIM AWAY FROM FACE.

Sheesh!

You have to be ****ing kidding me. "I bet all these chips." "How much is that?" "I don't have to tell you." Seriously, you're not some 2010 regged newbie with <100 posts. How can people who have been around this long be this ignorant or stupid?

LOL I KNOW RITE?!?!?

But seriously, can't believe someone who seems to have been around the block a few times wouldn't know the obvious answer to this question.

I've never been in a home game where someone moved in and then refused to answer how much it was. I have seen a couple players who didn't know but they restacked their chips into stacks of 10 for each denomination and the rest of the table helped them add it up.

Also... this might be a good time to mention that hiding big chips to prevent people from visually counting down your stack is against the rules. We had a player in a live tournament try that once. He had 4-5000 chips on the bottom of his back row of stacks... and everything else was small denomination (50-200). So it looked like he was in worse shape than he was. When that came to light -- as it always does in the worst way in a big hand -- the house owner (acting as the TD) ruled that the big chips weren't in play for that hand and then gave a 15 minute time out to the player. This guy was pretty on top of it and had the basic rules posted and among them was the thing about hiding big chips so no one could claim they didn't know.

When playing NL (live or online) the size of each player's stack is very important and is not supposed to be obscured. You don't have to count it down (if you haven't bet it) but you also can't prevent other people from getting a decently accurate estimate either.
