For ****'s sake. Just carry it. If driving, put it in a money belt. If flying, it's still not a very big deal.
I've carried $5k+ via domestic air several times. I just fold it, strap it, and put it in my carry-on. When I have to put my bag through the scanner, I take it out and hold it in my hand when I go through x-ray/back-scatter, telling TSA I want to keep my cash on me.
Pro tip, put a $20 on the outside of the roll. Doesn't attract much attention that way.
I've never been asked about why I have a roll with me, but if I were, I'd just say "poker money." There's no law against it and civil forfeiture only comes up if your bags may smell of weed, or some such.

$5K is not a big deal to travel with. I took that when I traveled for my last Circuit event and just held it in my hand as I stood in the scanner booth. Credit cards are loose in one pocket and cash was in the other...for the booth, I basically palm both as I tell the TSA weasel "currency and credit cards." NEVER had a problem...
