My understanding is that the underground scene in NY is completely controlled by organized crime. It seems hardly a stretch to think that one of the ways they discourage competition is by tipping off friendly or gullible elements in law enforcement.
I've been involved in going to NY underground games for 13+ years now and have never heard or thought this even once in my entire life. I can think of a grand total of two games I've ever been to, both in Italian-laden Staten Island, that had anyone involved with the Mafia. No one in NY cares about organized crime anymore - it stopped being the '80s a long time ago, they have zero power now.

Your average club here is started by 2 or 3 random players who think it's a great idea to make a quick buck, and said club usually features a bunch of 20-somethings with hoodies and IPods playing $1/$2 with < $3000 on the table.

Good to get some input from someone who is there, thanks. Do the underground clubs need to "fork over" a bit to authorities to keep open? There is a lot of that going on , we understand, in our neck of the woods. Part of business expenses.

I'm not really big into the underground NYC scene but I've been to a few games.

Most were just regular guys running a game for profit. One or two were run by eastern europeans and I assume they are "connected" somehow.

Interestingly, with few exceptions, I've felt more comfortable in the eastern european games both on a safety level and a game legitimacy level.
