I've been involved in going to NY underground games for 13+ years now and have never heard or thought this even once in my entire life. I can think of a grand total of two games I've ever been to, both in Italian-laden Staten Island, that had anyone involved with the Mafia. No one in NY cares about organized crime anymore - it stopped being the '80s a long time ago, they have zero power now.
Your average club here is started by 2 or 3 random players who think it's a great idea to make a quick buck, and said club usually features a bunch of 20-somethings with hoodies and IPods playing $1/$2 with < $3000 on the table.
