What is the "M"... ? What is the "M"... ?

I think i have mentioned in previous threads in the past not knowing what the "M" is and people belating it saying i would be a sick fish without knowing what the "M" is. I have never read a poker book and never will as i think its better to learn form mistakes etc. Can somebody please explain to me just for piece of mind what it is in the simplest context...

M stands for "search feature," though some people say it can also stand for "it's not that hard to just google it" and "you're a pretty cocky/adversarial guy for someone who doesn't even know what M is."

but if you really wanna bump other insignificant threads to the 2nd page just so you can get your answer here, it stands for the total amount of money in the pot preflop (sb+bb+antes=M, and you measure your stack in relation to that).

M = (stack size) / [ SB + BB + TOTAL antes ]

For example, if blinds are 1000/2000 with a 100 ante and your stack is 10,000 and there are 9 players (including you) on the table, THEN:

M =10,000 / 1000 + 2000 + (9 x 100) = 10,000 / 3,900 = 2.5 (approx.).

Essentially it is a measure of the number of rotations you have left before you are blinded out at the current blind/ante level. You need to be mindful of when the blinds/antes will increase, as this will affect your M.

Note:- Total antes = (# of players on your table) x (size of ante).

(M is for meow)

Haven't read HOH in years, so forgive me if something's off...

M = Your stack divided by amount in pot before the hand (blinds + antes).

Harrington divides M into a number of "zones."

Green Zone = >20, play as you will because you have a "safe" stack.
Yellow Zone = 10-20, play more aggressive and get some chips back.
Orange Zone = 5-10, shove or fold most of the time, although you can still make some small bets if you're closer to 10 or no antes are in.
Red Zone = <5, shove or fold only, and you should shove wide, especially when you have the power of first-in vigorish or at a tight, passive table.

PS - Chris is technically right, the search feature is your friend.

Pretty much, although IIRC the main difference in the Green and Yellow zones was not aggressiveness so much as hand selection. In the Green zone you can play things like 87s (in the right situations, of course) since your implied odds make up for the fact that you will fold most flops. In the Yellow zone your implied odds are not as high and the value of your lost pre-flop bets becomes more signficant so you should play fewer of these hands. You are also less likely to be able to have a lot of post-flop play and see additional cards since a higher percentage of your stack will be committed PF or on the flop.
