You're right - Volume is key tho not game selection - around 60% of FTP/Stars players (at the MTTs I play) are solid regs, not all winning players though.
Game theory optimal is basically the way you would play if you could see your opponents cards. It's how you would bet to extract max value (chips or cash) from your opponent. Now NLHE is close to solved at the higher stakes they say the game has been solved because people are getting close to GTO now. The money is in other variants e.g. PLO, Stud 8 etc. But only the high stakes have an active community playing these game predominantly. As for low/mid stakes, its safe to say any play style can be exploited - but your edge is smaller the closer people are playing to GTO then theres less top exploit. In other words its a game of who makes fewer mistakes and experience makes you more adept. Just my two cents.
However in MTTs, the variance added to the idea tilt can occur (in cash when you;re on tilt you can simply leave) but in MTTs you have to play until the end so in two discreet ways you still can jeep hope of you are prepared to put in the hours that you can beat the game you set out to beat.
