In general you need to get a feel for your oppenents hand range and then make the largest bet that you think has a good chance of getting called. In this case it seems like your oppenent has a pair that he is refusing to let go, or (more likely) a busted FD/SD which he isnt going to call any sized river bet with. So in this case I think a shove is fine as if he actually does have something he seem like the type that is going to call no matter what you bet.

After you bet the turn and get called, its one of those "fml" moments.

As played, when you hit the river hard and are likely to get paid off by all Jx/QQ/KK/maybe a spewy A10, I think instead of shoving you should check back, and pick off more hands that you beat, such as bluffs and small pocket pairs or flopped pairs/two pairs that would never call your river shove.
