Hello Everyone,
Early in a deep stack tournament, is open raising in early position with the medium suited connectors(T9s 98s 87s and 76s) and the suited one-gappers(J9s T8s 97s 86s 75s) a leak in my game? Even with deep stacks, should I wait to play these hands in later positions?

If you and your opponents are 70 to 100+bbs deep, then it's probably not the worst open if you're playing against a weaker table. Against stronger opponents, these hands should almost always be folded. Position is power, and it's very tough to have position or show a profit when raising in early position with weaker hands.

Thanks for the reply kurt23x...much appreciated. I've been reading the new Harrington book, and he advocates open raising with these hands from EP, was just curious what other players think of this. I agree with you, just seems on the -ev side. If I open with these types of hands in EP and then face a re-raise, I'm faced with either throwing the hand away (as well as my chips) OR calling his 3bet and now I'm playing out of position post-flop with an inferior hand against someone who showed true strength.

While deep stacked....he also says it's ok to open-raise from EP with the small pairs, 77's thru 22's. Not so sure about this play? Is this a good move from EP?

True, but he's not saying this in a vacuum. Most of his newer book is structured on what to do against different styles of players. I think you are oversimplifying your questions here.

Is he saying that openig in EP with these hands should be done when at weaker tables? And maybe when I've presented myself as a tighter player?

Harrington is outdated. If you want to keep up with today's game, I would suggest joining an online training site like runitonce.com.

I feel like harington was outdated before it came out lol

But to your question it depends.

kurt sums it up nice

Ill also say opening these hands with loose passives is pointless

Shouldn't we open these hands from EP a certain percentage of the time to balance our EP opening range?
