Hi, This is my first post here, please bare with me
I'm a low stakes player, recently I won a step 6 wsop ticket in a freeroll on stars. The ticket is worth $2,100 but stars won't let me exchange it for cash, transfer or sell it. If I play, I could win $12,500 in cash for the first place, but other payouts suck lol:
7-9 places = 0
6 place = $500
4-5 places = $1000
2-3 places = $1500
Needles to say I'll be playing with the sharks only!

I live in eastern europe, I work as a translator, my average monthly pay is $400-$500 and I'm in between jobs right now. Just the thought of gambling with 4 month's pay makes me sick. I really don't know what to do. What would you do in my place? Is there any way out of this situation without risking a heart attack?
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated

ask someone good to play it for you? offer him 20% of the $12500

I thought about that, but I can't imagine how to arrange that, I mean, how would he play from my account without risk of getting it frozen or something? Also how would he know I'd pay him if he wins, etc.

Can't you sell your ticket to somebody interested in playing? I thought Stars allowed you to transfer T$.

Try not to suck and hope to get lucky. Don't play these things if you can't stand it.

You have to accept the truth Neo: There was never a 2100$! As long as you didn´t play for it it´s only virtual. So don´t be a pussy -> play! win! go and rock vegas!

thanks for all the input, guys! I saw a post somewhere about a guy who "sold shares" for this kind of SnG, thought maybe someone knew more about that.. But yeah, I guess if I don't find a solution, I'll just go a head and take a shot at it

You've invested no money to get the ticket so you lose nothing if you don't place and gain $$ if you do. You're still free rolling, have fun with it and just play!

This is a pretty serious breach of the Terms of Service for PokerStars.

While I recognise you don't mean to, you would effectively deceiving the other players in the event.

thanks for the info, I wasn't planning to go that way, but I also didn't realise that it would be frowned upon.

this time, it looks like you might have to play it out.

next time, you might have to do your research a bit better.

good luck!

PSMJ,

Do you like, have to put on your cape when you answer these posts? Do you have a little red alert button like the mods do that tells you when you need to change poster names?

What I would do in your shoes:

Basically play tight and try to make sure you don't place OOTM. You need to recognize that it's very unlikely you'll take down 1st as you'll be in one of the toughest STTs around. Just placing 5th would be close to 20% of your annual income. This is assuming your skill level is pretty low in STTs, I just noticed your registration date so I might be assuming too much. The flipside of this is that you need to be aware of your image and be wary of being pushed around, so I'm thinking this would lend itself to a more trappy game depending on the opponents aggression level.

I originally wasn't going to reply but I started to really imagine myself making so little (no offense) and playing one of these, what that would be like. It's really though giving any advice at all without knowing more of your skill level.

I know this is easier said than done, but try no to think of how much you're playing for in order to keep a level head. I think if you consider just getting into the money a goal and then moving up each money spot after that, it will help you focus on the task at hand (break a problem into pieces.) After all a 5th in this would be huge for you personally, whereas most of the players would be disappointed with a 5th. Try to use that to your advantage.

Very true. You never "worked" for the $$ per say. Someone gave you that & you should just look at it as a chance to earn some REAL $$. GO for it & play your A game. It's all mental. Don't let it throw you off. What's the WORST that can happen? You lose something you never had or was yours to begin with to begin with?

I suppose you're in the majority of people economists find blow gifted money far more loosely than money from their payroll? A dollar is a dollar is a dollar.

Would you be so carefree with this in the position of supporting yourself on 400 or 500 bucks a month and unemployment on top of that?

thanks a lot people! a lot of great advise there, I really appreciate every piece. I am not a total newbie (I hope not lol), but of course I've never touched stakes even close to that high. But it looks I'll have to do it after all, and I'll try to do my best, not to suck and enjoy it. I'll let you know know the results, thanks so much again

do not consider it as money, the worst thing you can do is playing with scared money. thats why people use bankroll management so theyre not afraid that theyll lose theyre bankroll etc. the second u start comparing your poker account money to your real life money, or the amount you playing with in poker seriously effects your mindset/real life money, you should move down. so as you won this from a freeroll, and as you cant tranfer the cash, do not think of it as money, think of it as a gift and a shot to win alot

Like I told you per PM, I sold shares for my 1st Step6 on http://staking.parttimepoker.com/ and even swapped 10-% with a friend who will be playing one S6 in the near future.
In the end I won and paid my investors around 5k of my $12500 cash.
But if I had busted without cashing like in my 2nd Step6 (damn you delegator for my 9th place finish btw) I would have secured around $650 in cash and a chance at another $1k

And you have to forget that you are playing a 2k SNG and play your game.

No - I just have Firefox logged in as "Josem" and MSIE logged in as PSMJ. Different colour schemes = minimising the chance of confusion.

This, by contrast, is entirely acceptable.

You are able to make a deal with another player which involves them paying you money upfront, and then you paying them a portion of the winnings. This is not unusual with high buyin tournaments.

However, I need to emphasise that if you make such a deal, that it can not and will not be enforced by PokerStars. There's certainly a risk in the trustworthiness of other players, so you need to be careful.

PokerStars requires that the person who's name is on the account is the person playing the account. What you do with your money is your own business.

Why would you enter the steps in the first place if you aren't comfortable with getting deep?

You'll just need to play it. GL.

I never entered the steps, I played in a freeroll, placed 2nd out of 300+ ppl, the guy who won it took down the 12.5k package and I ended up with a step 6 ticket.. I wish I had won the HU with him lol

oops sorry, you said that already. Nice job, best of luck.

You're going to have to play it, so spend as much time as you can game selecting. Besides your play, it is the only other thing you have control over, so take advantage and be patient finding the best game.
