How many buy ins would you have for hyper turbo sng satellites? I'd like to know how many buy ins people prefer to have.

Depends on so many things
  • the format (some hypers are faster than others)
  • your edge in the game (if any — depends on the format, other regs, game selection)
  • buyin (higher buyin games are harder, ldo)
  • your rakeback/VIP status (this can be counted as part of your earnings from each game you play)
  • your personal attitude to risk
  • your ability to reload from offline funds/earnings if your online account goes busto

How much other people have in their bankroll isn't really that important imo. As you're a beginner, I'd advise you just start off in games where you are comfortable with the amount of money you are risking, and see how you get on. But once you get going you'll see how big the swings are, and if you want to turn it into an income then you will probably need a bankroll of several hundred buyins, and perhaps as many as a thousand.

If you want to see how some of the best players in your game are doing then try and look them up on a results tracking service such as sharkscope. In a game like hyper STTs, where edges are usually minuscule, you won't really get much of an idea of your expectation in the game until you have played several thousand games.

well i'm depositing around $1000 in two weeks on stars, i played a few $18.77 hypers and i do well in them but it definitely wasn't good bankroll management, i've currently been grinding the $3-$7 satellites now. Do you think that 60-100 buyins would be ok to start with?
there's also like no rakeback really in satellites so i don't count it as earnings tbh

and do you really need over 1000 buy ins? or was that an exaggeration lol

edit - i'd be doing this for extra money while in college so maybe i should stick to the $3-$7 sats?

cant you play regular hyper sngs? bit slower, bigger edges, bigger roi, smaller swings, available 24/7 and not 1 hour before tourneys etc
if you are good you most likely could start of with 7$ buyin without big risk of ruin

i just hate the hu min cash shiz in regular hypers, if you cash in a satellite it's like 3 buyins and no hu which is what i prefer tbh

If you've found the level you want to play at for a while, then hundreds of buy-ins is a good idea if you can't redeposit without grinding back up the stakes. But if you're still building your bankroll, I think it's fine to move up on a 20 buy-in rule, as long as you move back down if you hit a losing streak.

Some would argue that having to move down after a bad run means you take longer to recover the losses, but exactly the same argument applies to building your bankroll quicker if you move up sooner. Just don't move up until you feel confident in your game at the current level, and don't be slow to move back down if you feel you're adjusting badly.

I should add that I do this single-tabling. Moving up on 20 buy-ins might be a bit tight if you're multi-tabling. Depends on your ROI, but I'd still say it's worth taking shots sooner rather than later, if you feel comfortable. These days, you'll see a lot of the same regs at multiple buy-ins, so you should already have an idea of how tough the competition is before you move up.

There's no way i'd do a 20 buy-in rule. Thats way to loose imo. My bankroll will be around $1400 and if i entered a $70 satellite and didn't cash then thats a big grind to get back. Big gamble IMO.

If your ROI is good enough at the higher buy-in, then it'll be a harder grind if you stay playing lower for longer. But yes, it has to suit your comfort zone, and once you find a level you're happy staying at for a while you'll want a lot more than 20 buy-ins to work with. It's just quicker to get there if you move up sooner, as long as you're not moving up before you're comfortable.

Hi Harry,

People ask this question often and get variations of answers. There's no 'right' answer. Most full time grinders keep 150-200 buy ins on hand nowadays. Many are happy adhering to 100 or so still. If you don't want to reload or move down, I wouldn't recommend dipping down too much further than that. If you don't mind controlled shot taking you can definitely put together a plan for moving up with a lot less than that. Spend some time mapping it out and give yourself some maneuvering room. Get in touch with someone from the forums if you want someone to evaluate the idea. Otherwise I'm sure youll be fine focusing on the strategy content within your play. GL!
