HELPING A TILTED FRIEND HELPING A TILTED FRIEND

ok so i have a friend who is currently going through a massive cold streak which is horrible to watch repeatedly as it seems to be a never-ending cycle of 5-1 suckouts and backdoor flushes etc etc...

At the start he handled it very well with the key phrases such as
"in with the best, wat can i do"
and making notes on players etc.. which made me believe that he was on the right lines towards progressing through the levels in the near future.

Results for him since that point have been very poor and actually to the point where his game is almost unrecognisable, he puts in random sessions that end quickly and he is saying things like "thats how i run" etc... i have been there and luckily managed to read some good articles and hear what others have to say on controlling your emotional stability so i have been able to manage my emotions better (still not good enough for me to be a massively succesful player). His game is so strong when he plays his B+ game or better and it seems like a shame of a talent to waste

So...what can i do to help my friend realise that the downswing has affected his game? and that although he is still gettin coolered at times his game has deteriorated? I have recommended changes to his game but these have fallen on understandably deaf ears considering the emotional mindstate of his game ATM.

I know that it would be hard to hear it from someone (esp someone weaker that you as i consider myself to be in comparison to my friend playing his A-game) but i want to get him playin his A-game soon.

any past experiences with this or any advice would be great

Find religion and pray. Also, it's not out of the realm of possibility that someone can be unstable with a ridiculous mindset that doesnt affect how they make decisions. He could have this gift. Though it's doubtful.

I'm one of those made for tv movie cheesy cliche types that believes him quitting sessions early and having emotional outbursts is a good sign and very good thing. He's not chasing losses or reverting to zombie-mode, so you have something to work with. Quitting early is boss.

There is nothing you can really do but be a friend and do what you can. The invisible luck of life where some people don't swong until they have a success and some people swong when still trying to make something of themselves is a bitch. Just be there, be a friend, get him laid, pump him up, get him laid, etc.

MTTs or Cash?

Playing live sometimes helps rekindle the "love of the game". It sucks to run bad though, you lose confidence in how to play because you're never getting that positive reinforcement.

In the game of poker, you have to accept the fact that some people will always be donators.

I was going through the same thing for over a month, I had lost a lot of money prior to my downswing which made things worse because I was obv chasing HUGE losses by playing mid stake mtts.
I won't say I'm running great right now but I will admit over the past week I have had much better results.
What made a huge difference for me was finally being able to admit to myself I am NOT playing my best game, yes I was getting hit with the 80/20 bad beats late which caused me to tilt in other tourneys but that is no reason to why I was losing so much.
If I was you get some of your friends hands histories from his winning days and get some from his current sessions and compare the two, you will obv see many leaks and hopefully your friend will make all necessary changes.

had a nasty run like this about a year ago.. and somewhere along the line (after/during much berating myself/whining etc) i tried to read and study as much as i could. I found that in studying, even if i didnt learn anything new or plug any particular leak (and i did learn a couple of leaks i had - not sure i plugged them tho), the reinforcements that came from the study kinda allowed me to keep chugging along, and then one day..... binked my biggest score.. which then helped my confidence which lead to the greatest run of my poker life so far.

cliffs: basically get him to keep studying, it will reinforce his good play/habits (and may lead him to spot leaks) which may provide the fuel to keep pushing thru the downswing..

Bless

PS.. pls excuse the mini brag.
