Going back to school... how to balance with poker? Going back to school... how to balance with poker?

I recommend focusing on school M-TH and playing on Saturday and Sunday. This is when most major tournaments commence, bigger prize pools, flatter payouts, etc.

I don't want to sound like a parent or guardian, but school should come first. Focus on that so you can move to the next level in your life. Poker is fun, but it really is just a game. It won't get you a job and it is a highly unlikely career reserved for those most gifted (and dare I say, lucky) individuals.

Focus on school. Then play poker. It really can be as simple as that, but it comes down to self-control and good study habits. College is a great, wonderful experience. I think it is unwise to spend most of it on PokerStars and FullTilt, although both can be very fun, but really it is a short term ordeal.

Again, I don't want to sound like any sort of guardian, but this is just my advice. =)

doubt shaun wakes up early enough for price is right.

Interesting thread and I've been wondering the same things.

However, make sure you ALWAYS put social life ahead of poker, especially if you're about to graduate (6 hours, what up?).

1. just reiterating the scheduling part. my schedule is basically monday to thursday noon to ~3pm, so i can pretty much play mtts any day of the week when nothing else is going on.

2. studying at the library is a good idea. even if im not playing poker its so hard to be doing work at my desk and not be browsing 2p2, CRs, etc.

3. definitely put fun ahead of poker. i kind of regret skipping some potential fun nights at college to grind mtts, but i realized that before last year and now i only play poker if there is absolutely nothing going on and its a lame weeknight or w/e. (and put school ahead of poker but w/e, school isnt hard as long as you go to classes and pay attention)

Not going to play poker during college hopefully (going to play 1-2 events at turning stone's series over thanksgiving break). Just going to party and work a lot to build up my bankroll and play a lot over winter break. Need to save up a lot of money though bc I'm planning on going to Atlantic City and playing at the borgata this summer bc i turn 21 in june.

don't wake up and immediately start up every MTT that's late registering before you eat anything

1. ratemyprofessors.com before registering
2. take notes about when assignments are due in a single day planner and not in random places and be diligent in getting those due dates in that day planner
3. if you have to temp ban yourself consider playing cash or SNGs on weekdays and tournaments on sunday or just not playing poker at night is another thing i'm considering doing.

Hey,

****, I just typed a really big post, but I just clicked a page back so it's all gone.

I just wanted to say I'm in the exact situation as you. I'm in the 3rd year of my bachelor Communications, and I already have a delay of a couple of years. However, I don't feel like commiting to a dayjob as of now.

I have had some moderate succes in MTT's, but I think I can achieve more in poker, with some discipline, which I lacked in the past. I'm focussed now though. The thing I think is very important is to just attend the majority of the classes. You gain some much-needed knowledge which helps you prepare for your exams and also saves you time to study for them.

My goal is however to spend the large amount of spare time after classes playing poker. Seeing as I ended a couple of lengthy relationships about half a year ago, I;m now unconstrained and able to do whatever I like since I also moved out of the house some months ago. This opens up some possibilities to put in the volume and the discipline needed to achieve something, and I genuinely believe I can pull something off in the next year or so..

Anyway to keep me from rambling, my point is: just put in enough time in your education to succeed, so you will have something to fall back on. That's my goal at least. I'm not going for cum laude, I'm just aiming for C+'s, I guess. It's what they call the 'zesjescultuur' (6's culture) in the Netherlands. Putting just enough time in your education so you can pass your classes, leaving you enough spare time not to neglect your social life etc.

Good luck to you (and me)

My resume is completely blank. I've only had the ****ty pizza place job while in high school, which I doubt gets me far. That said, balance is key. Saturdays are for football and drinking and sundays are for grinding. The rest we'll have to fill in when the time comes

My situation is pretty different because I'm in Australia and most tourneys here are during the day (eg: Nightly 100k starts at 11am) so if I have uni that day then I pretty much can't play. I just set aside Friday and Saturday to play, don't get to play the Sundays that often (they're on Monday over here). On the plus side my session usually finishes by 6pm at the latest so I can put in a full session and still go out after

I just stopped poker totally during termtime. I honestly think its just not worth it, however much ppl say poker doesnt affect grades.. it really does I think. And at the end of the day getting a decent degree is way more life +EV than earning money playing poker for a few years.

Well my schedule this semester is Tuesday and Thursday only, 3 classes for a total of 12 hours running from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or something. Oh yea i can choose to go to class when i want because they are technically online classes and the lectures are all online for all of them. I might need to cut back on poker though.

Can anyone beat that?

AST1002 is called "Discover the Universe" and is basically the easiest class I could find. I don't anticipate actually having to go to it. ISM and GEB are online classes that will require some effort. SLS and ACG are just 1 credit classes called "Job Search Strategies" and "Professional Speaker Series" where I basically just show up and listen and learn and not do anything.

ratemyprofessors.com before registering is obviously crucial, everyone should do this
