I think this is a lot more nuanced than you're suggesting, and very dependent on both V's and your image. If V is at all tricky, and especially, if you are viewed by V as a perceptive player who would bet an overpair for value here after his check, but who would be smart enough to abandon the hand on the turn to a x/r, V could very well have a J. I'm definitely checking behind on river as you do have sd value against an A. As others have commented, I would have flatted the flop.
