hey guys i'm actually not a tournament player at all, i felt like the guy wasn't opening from the btn as much as someone should be and i leaned towards a fold.

Merge - $0+$0|<> NL - Holdem - 3 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

Hero (BB): 15.63 BB
BTN: 8.87 BB (VPIP: 19.89, PFR: 20.51, 3Bet Preflop: 7.69, Hands: 181)
SB: 15.45 BB (VPIP: 38.10, PFR: 31.78, 3Bet Preflop: 12.50, Hands: 127)

3 players post ante of 0.1 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.8 BB) Hero has A 5

BTN raises to 8.77 BB and is all-in, fold, fold

BTN wins 2.8 BB

i actually did some icm stuff and i scoped the guy to see what his stats were and he had 17k in cashes over a few years so not brain dead.

even with this ridic range for anyone it's super super close

just would like to know what everyone thinks, thanks again

edit: also it was like 700 up to, 450 2nd 300 3rd

That range you've given him is way too narrow - 3 handed I'd include all broadways, all pairs, all aces and some strong SCs. Against this range A5 might be slightly +cEV but not sure about ICM implications tbh.

(1.8+8.87)+7.87/7.87=2.355 ... 1/2.355=.424 ... so you need 42% maybe 43% to break even on a call. If hes not brain dead which isnt then he is usually shipping 33% (22+ Ax+ K5s+ K9o+ Q8s+ QTo+ J8s+ JTo T7s+ 97s+ 86s+ 76s) and your A5 doesn't have that kind of equity.

No? Pokerstove gives me 46% equity with A5o against the 33% range you describe (34.5%).

Haha probably. I used my little equity calc on my phone - probably not as good as stove or equilab.
