villain was 26/15 over 39 hands.

Full Tilt Poker $1 + $0.20 No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t60/t120 Blinds - 7 players
The Official 2+2 Hand Converter Powered By DeucesCracked.com

BTN: t1390 11.58 BBs
SB: t1330 11.08 BBs
Hero (BB): t1815 15.12 BBs
UTG: t2765 23.04 BBs
UTG+1: t2810 23.42 BBs
MP: t2695 22.46 BBs
CO: t695 5.79 BBs

Pre Flop: (t180) Hero is BB with 8 J
UTG calls t120, 5 folds, Hero checks

Flop: (t300) 9 K J (2 players)
Hero bets t240, UTG raises to t480, Hero calls t240

Turn: (t1260) 7 (2 players)
Hero???

I called the flop in hopes that I could shove the turn if my hand improves. Should I just fold the flop? I know that I probably should have just checked the flop.

But as played can I really c/f the turn here? Should I be happy to just get it in? Or should I just have got it in on the flop???

Thoughts, comments, criticisms?

I am not a good poker player but I am getting better.

What hand do you put the villian on or does it not matter to your decision. You are playing a J 8? It is a SNG event. Are you really going to commit your tournament life on a coin flip? If you are a new player or you are frequently outplayed then push. Otherwise a push counts on fold equity which you might have little.

I view he could easily have AJ,KQ, JJ, or even KJ, K9 in a $1 game. I am not sure he will fold to any bet. He did call from UTG and reraise you on the flop.

Before calling his raise you had about 1500 chips or plenty to win this tournament. Why risk it on a draw with 7 players still in the game at this point?

He has your chips covered, probably has the best hand, and has shown that he is willing to put chips in on this hand. I think you pick a better spot.

Actually as the UTG player he might play AA exactly as he has played so far.

good luck

You have middle pair, a flush draw and a small amount of fold equity. This is a good spot to get the chips in the middle. Preflop he gave no indication he had AA.

I would try and get it all in on the flop with a check raise. If he checked behind I'd be okay with getting a free shot at improving. The way the hand played I'd move in on the flop after adding a gut shot to what was already a pretty big draw.

You sort of priced yourself in for the shove on the flop but I'd probably rather just have checked because I'm not all that likely to get called by worse and I'm not super afraid of the turn. You can call a small bet on the flop and getting it in can't be terrible, although you can often be dominated or way behind a set or straight on this board, so it's a lot thinner than some seem to think. As played, ugh, you don't have much, if any, fold equity and you're often going to be drawing to a worse two pair for some of your outs, but I think I'd reluctantly shove over his raise on the flop. Now, bleh. I mean, I don't ever just call that raise tbh.

Flop:
I'm with MB, I would have just checked. You have the 3rd best FD, as well as 2nd pair, lousy kicker.

Looking at villian's numbers, there are a lot of Kings in his hands, as well as aces and queens that may or may not include the ace or queen of hearts.

as played:

You bet, villian min-raised. Man you are in a real pickle here. You could call, hit your jack on the turn and still lose to a higher jack, hit your flush on the turn and lose to a higher flush.

Truthfully, I prolly would have folded. MB is prolly right, shoving over his flop raise may be best.

I would have checked and see what did.
